- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2014I’ll be honest, The Crazy Sexy Diet craze is something I avoided for years, because I thought it was a ‘diet,’ when in fact diet is the most inaccurate word to use for what this book is. This book is a lifestyle book, it’s a book about how to change your lifestyle for the better, how to improve it, and how to live fully and in the moment. This is such a wonderfully life affirming book, a piece of truly inspirational literature.
So what got me hooked finally? Well, I was already vegan when I finally read it - had been for about a year - but I was still in that new phase of veganism where everything is new and exciting and where all you want in the world is to devour every piece of information you can get your hands on. As a person interested in science, medicine and alternative therapies - I study holistic health, and originally became vegan for health reasons - vegan nutrition and lifestyle books were at the top of my interest list. Still I wasn’t about to go out and buy this book - that pesky diet word again - but when I saw it at my local library I thought, why not?
I took it home, and read it cover to cover. I was inspired, enthralled, and amazed. I didn’t learn anything new about veganism by reading this book, but I learnt a lot about other alternative therapies, and I learnt a lot about raw foods. I found Kris Carr to have an easy-going and down to earth style. She is who she is and she doesn’t hide it or change it for anyone. Yeah she swears, yeah she talks a bit like a valley girl sometimes, some people don’t like that, but it doesn’t bother me. Her story of beating incurable cancer is awe-inspiring and amazing, it still blows my mind
Kris Carr and her personality are only one of the great things about this book. The book itself is beautiful, I love the layout, it’s fun, and easy to take in and absorb. I love the breakdown of the book, and I love the varied information contained within the pages. It’s this variety that makes this book a lifestyle book not a diet book, and anyone who uses this book strictly as a diet book is missing the point in my opinion. This book should be used as a guide, a handy ‘how to’ or ‘what to do’ or ‘how to eat’ resource, but not necessarily a bible.
I think ti’s wonderful that Carr also includes a ton of resources in the book, including books, websites, organizations, supplements, vitamins, even protein powders. She talks about enemas, yoga, dry brushing, detoxing, juicing, green smoothies, meditation, giving thanks, and all that other cool ‘health’ and ‘hippy’ stuff that so many people shy away from. She also fills the book with practical information about factory farming and how animals raised for human consumption are treated. Again, this was stuff I already knew, but I think all of her writing is so perfectly clear and easy to understand that for a novice to this lifestyle it will be a compelling and thought-provoking read.
Carr also includes a 21 day cleanse for people to follow to reboot their health. I actually never did the 21 day cleanse but I loved reading through it. About a year after I borrowed this book from the library I bought my own copy and I used it just this past January as a guide for a month long whole foods cleanse that I embarked on, mostly I followed the food portion, not the other parts, but I would like to do the entire cleanse in full someday.
Lastly one of the things I can say with certainly about this book is that Carr is so enthusiastic about juicing that her juicing fever really hooked me. I didn’t buy a juicer right after reading this book but the seed had been planted and I finally took the plunge last year after watching “Fat Sick and Nearly Dead.” I’ve never looked back, and I love it. I have Kriss Car and Joe Cross to thank for that.
As for recipes I’ve tried,
Urban Zen Juice - Pretty good
Green Guru Smoothie - Pretty good
Woodstock Peace Salad - Loved it
Tahini Dressing - Loved it
Cabbage Hemp Salad - Loved it
Sweet Dijon Vinaigrette - Loved it
Miso Carrot Dressing - Loved it
Buddha Bowl - Loved it
Southwest Black Bean and Roasted Sweet Potato Burger - Loved it
Asian Medly (Stir Raw) - Loved it
Avocado Chocolate Pudding - Loved it
The only thing I found disappointing is that there weren’t more recipes. I was also disappointed that only a few of the recipes were actually written by Carr herself. Most of the recipes come courtesy of celebrity vegan chefs or, other prominent vegans. Other then that I loved the book, and I’ve actually bought it for a few friends and inspired a few friends to buy their own copy just from talking about how much I loved it. So far noone I’ve given a copy to has been disappointed and so I’d recommend this book for anyone interested in making a change in their life.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2025I decided to give this book a try after hearing a lot of positive reviews, and it definitely did not disappoint. The focus on plant-based eating and simple lifestyle changes was refreshing and motivating. I found the advice to be practical and easy to incorporate into my daily life, and the recipes are absolutely delicious. I’ve been eating more veggies and feeling more energized. This book not only gave me a new perspective on food but also on my overall health. I highly recommend it for anyone looking to improve their diet and live a more vibrant life.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2013Love, love, love this book. It has changed my life...literally. I saw Kris on Oprah many years ago and she really intrigued me w/her cancer and how she stopped it in her tracks by changing her diet and lifestyle. But it took me a number of years to revisit her and really start looking into how she did it. I rented her book from the library and was hooked, so I bought it and decided to follow her suggestions. Now, I'm not as committed as she is, which is probably why I'm still struggling a bit, but I'm on my way. I've had a spinal disease for 20+ years, only diagnosed 10 years ago. It's not curable but treatable with management surgeries, I have about 9 a year and I take pain meds daily. So I've started following her juicing, no sugar, no caffeine, and no milk diet. I've reduced my meat (but not completely eliminated it, I love it too much). My pain has changed. It's still there, in the middle of my back but all the extraneous pain in my hips, neck, shoulders, etc. have dissipated. I sleep much better and have so much energy. I was always so tired but I have a glass of juice in the morning and boom, it's better than a jolt of coffee and you don't have a crash or feel hungry. It's amazing. I will continue to implement her ideas and strategies in hopes that I improve even more. The other side effect is that I've lost weight. Can't beat that. My hubby was so impressed he started to follow the "diet", or I should say lifestyle, as well. He's lost his belly and double chin, his pants literally fall off of him and he feels so much better.
Her writing style is great. She's like talking to a girlfriend. So much easier to read than those professional, doctorey books. Yes, she has a bit of trash talk sprinkled about...but get over it. The message behind it is way too important to let that bother you. If you are ready to get healthy, then check this book out. It's complete, guides you slowly and even if you don't follow every single thing, you'll gain so much insight and knowledge into how the body works, you'll be highly tempted to improve your life. Love you Kris, thanks for guiding us!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tough but sensible and incredibly healthy
This is a book about becoming Vegan - or close to vegan. That means no protein from anything that has eyes - including milk, cheese and eggs. For any normal North American diet follower this is a major and far from easy change. Food preparation times rise as does the time needed to shop as fresh vegetables have to be sourced every 2-3 days - preferably daily as they do in Europe. However - the results from changing your eating habits to this kind of diet are startlingly good. Buy this book and eat its recipes exclusively for 30 days and you will never go back. You may occasionally feel the need for something familiar - I eat fish (usually salmon or lox) about twice a month and I have an egg or two about once a month. Last night I had a steak - the first red meat in 2 years. It was nice and brought back many good taste memories but if I don't do that again for another 2 years i wont be upset - it's just not what I eat any more. I use this book and changed my diet for the same reasons she did - cancer. If that is your fate then buy her books and follow her dietary advice regardless of what else you do. Eating like this is key to surviving and boosting your immune system to fight back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling information and life changing results
I have tried many different eating programs: low-fat, Atkins, the Zone, vegetarian, etc., all in the quest for a more healthy lifestyle / way of eating than is offered by the standard western diet. This book easily and simply explains in a very accessible way how different foods work in our body to produce different positive (or negative) effects, and how much more in control of our health we have the capacity to be, once we're armed with the knowledge of how the foods we eat impact our health. The tone is conversational, and it's like having a friend guide you through the maze of food information to give you critical information that you can use to change your life starting tomorrow. I found that this book, along with The China Study, gave me a strong feeling of certainty, that I would be foolish to not follow an eating programme similar to this. The evidence available that it can save your life, and/or extend your lifespan, is very clear and compelling.
I have tried many of the recommendations in the book. The recipes are yummy, the food is easy to make, I learned new things about which foods (and superfoods!) need to take priority on my shopping list, and what self-care rituals will make an impact in my overall health. My skin is looking much better, and all in all I feel much more vital, energized and alive when I eat in this way. Thanks Kris!
If you're looking for an all-encompassing program to live a more healthy life, that explains how food can work just as effectively (or more so), than drugs or supplements, to keep you healthy and even help you overcome disease states, then you've found a winner with this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Uno de los mejores libros que he leído

5.0 out of 5 stars tolles Buch
