Founder of Trapital: insights on music, media, and culture

Diddy and Diageo have parted ways after 15 years. Diddy says that Diageo: • neglected his Ciroc vodka and DeLeon tequila brands • invested more in George Clooney's Casamigos tequila brand • dismissed Ciroc and DeLeon as "urban" brands Diddy filed a lawsuit. Diageo denies all claims of racism. At its peak, Ciroc sold 2 million cases in 2015. So what happens next? Diddy and Ciroc had a 50 - 50 profit split in place. Diddy doesn't own equity, but he and Diageo had once agreed that the two parties would share proceeds evenly if Ciroc was ever sold. A spirits industry expert I spoke to estimated that Ciroc could be worth up to $2 billion based on Diageo's valuation. Now we'll see how this all plays out. Ciroc may likely find a new home. If you like breakdowns like this, check out Trapital. It's our free newsletter that keeps you up on the business of music, media, and culture. Our next breakdown is actually on Diddy's record label, Bad Boy Entertainment. Perfect timing. Sign up here and I'll send you our next memo: https://lnkd.in/dqbqnWr8 What do you think happens next?

Some of this is Diddy’s fault. He sold Ciroc as a lifestyle… that lifestyle appeals to a lot of people but not everyone. Urban/Black/Hiphop doesn’t work with everyone, as we’re seeing now. Clooney, Ryan Reynolds, etc have more “mainstream” brands that have a greater chance at global appeal with less baggage. It’s callous but it’s normal business. Diddy should’ve evolved the Ciroc brand more.

Surprising he didn’t have any equity as part of his deal with them.

If there’s another pop culture personality you could see as the face of Ciroc who would it be?

Let me say this: most people have no idea George Clooney owns Casamigos, yet it’s mentioned in just as many “urban” promos as DeLeon …

He could really start his own line of products and start with 100% equity. I’m sure he’d be able to attract customers.

I hate this for Puff… Ciroc ain’t Ciroc without him BUT I really thought Puff had some equity in Ciroc…? Ima feel crazy buying that Watermelon Flavored Ciroc now… They did the Deleon name drop in the new song “Act Bad” I’m thinking it’s abt to take off… Thanks for the breakdown!🙏🏽

I'm curious what it would have looked like had he also had a percentage of the equity. Didn't JayZ have a similiar dipute? Was his deal profit split only or did he share in equity also? I believe it was maybe Bacardi/D'usse? Dan Runcie
