These Baked Apple Donuts with Maple Glaze are seriously the best baked donuts ever! Moist, apple-spiced flavor dipped in the tastiest maple glaze known to man. And only 196 calories per donut!
I have been patiently waiting. Waititng to share this very recipe with you.
You know when you have a recipe at home that’s a hit (as in, homerun kinda hit) and you just want to keep making it again and again? That’s how these donuts were for me.
My boys raved and raved and literally, these donuts were gone in about 30 minutes, max. All twelve. They begged me to make them again. My oldest just came over to my computer and saw the pictures of these apple donuts and said, “mom you need to make those again. They were so good.” That’s a winner in my book. 😉
You know what else is a winner? The ingredients for this month’s Mystery Dish.
This month was hosted by Marcie from Flavor the Moments. I really loved the ingredients this month and ended up making a brussels sprouts recipe as well as this one. I love getting creative with ingredients, especially ones that are seasonal, like what Marcie picked:
- pork
- fennel
- kabocha squash
- hard apple cider
- heavy cream
- orange
- farro
- hazelnuts
- quince
- thyme
- maple syrup
- brussels sprouts
Any recipes coming to you when you see these ingredients?
To me, these donuts are the epitome of fall. Apple, spices, maple. Perfection. I can’t stress enough how moist, flavorful and delicious these were! I can’t wait to make them again! I might even give these out to the teachers this year at my son’s school!
Ingredients
- 3 eggs
- 1/2 cup + 2 Tbsp. Truvia Baking Blend OR 1 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 1/4 cup applesauce room temperature
- 4 Tbsp. orange juice
- 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 2 cups white whole wheat flour
- 1 tsp. apple pie spice
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/4 cup coconut oil melted
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 1/2 Tbsp. real maple syrup
- 1/8 tsp. salt
- 2-3 Tbsp. heavy cream or milk but might not need as much, maybe 1-2 Tbsp.
- 1/4 tsp. maple flavoring
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350º F. Grease 2 (6 donut) pans and set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine eggs, Truvia, and applesauce. Lightly mix.
- Then add orange juice, vanilla, flour, apple pie spice, salt, and baking powder. Blend until mostly combined and then add the coconut oil.
- Scoop batter into donut pans and place in preheated oven. Bake for 15-18 minutes, until cooked through and golden. Let rest for a few minutes in the pan and then lightly peel donuts out. Set aside to cool.
- Meanwhile, mix together powdered sugar, maple syrup, salt, cream and maple flavoring in a small bowl until creamy, glaze-like consistency. When donuts are cooled, dip the tops into the glaze and place on a cooling rack until set.
- Devour! Store leftovers (if you have any) in an airtight container.

Those donuts do look delicious! I love the mystery dish idea. You really have to think outside the box and get creative. Great job with this one!
I’m glad you liked the ingredients this month, Jen — and I LOVE what you made with them! I’m pinning these donuts to make them — my boys will flip for these! 🙂
Thanks Marcie! I love being challenged every month in this group. It’s fun! And I really did like the ingredients you chose. Thanks for hosting!
It’s been far far far too long since I have had a doughnut. I just bought a new doughnut pan. Do you see where I am going with this???? Ha—
Oh, I see where you’re going. You NEED to go there! These are so good! Thanks for stopping by, Carol! xo!
They look delicious! I don’t have donut pans. Do you think they could be baked as muffins or a cake? Adjusting time, that is.
I bet they could, Maria! They have a very muffin-like batter consistency, so I’m thinking muffins or possibly in a loaf pan. With, like you said, adjusting the time. Let me know if you do give it a try that way! I actually have only one donut pan (cuz I’m cheap, ha! It was only like $8 at Target) and I did one batch at a time!
WOW! These look amazing. I went to pin them and was trying to decide if I should put them in my Breakfast or Desserts folder. Maybe I’ll have them for both! The perfect way to start and end the day. 🙂 By the way, the mystery dish sounds so fun, and what yummy ingredients!
I would consider these breakfast, lunch, dinner AND dessert! LOL!! Thanks for stopping by, Erin!! And thanks for the pin! xo!
I love a baked donut, and that glaze! Oh my! I could dive into a pool of that stuff! Pinned!
Me too!! Nothing better than donut glaze! Thanks Justine!
These look so fluffy and amazing! And I’m obsessed with maple glaze. We must be on the same wavelength right now, because I have a maple-glazed donut recipe coming out tomorrow. I’m not at all surprised that your kids went nuts for these!
And I’m a teacher, so can I teach your son so that you send me some of these? 🙂
What grade do you teach?? I didn’t know you were a teacher! That’s awesome!! I can’t wait to see your donuts! Totally checking those out tomorrow!
These look divine! I would eat just about anything if it was covered in a maple glaze. Yuuumm!
Me too!! I love frostings, glazes… basically sugar in any form. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by, Allison!
I love those homerun recipes – and I can see why these were a hit. They look delicious! I love how thick the glaze is, yum!
OMG that glaze, Cate. I may or may not have licked the bowl. 😉
I can believe those disappeared quickly. I am dying with pleasure over all that maple!
Jen, I’m about to reach through my screen and snatch one of these babies up! Goodness those look so good, and the fact that they are 196 calories each is pretty much blowing my mind. That maple glaze looks good enough to slurp up all on its own!
These look so amazing, Jen. That frosting!!
