At the conclusion of this Winter School in #translation Studies hosted by Università Ca' Foscari Venezia in Treviso, let me highlight the key positives from my point of view: 🌍 A truly international attendance (people from Italy, Spain, France, Poland, Estonia, Algeria, South Africa, the United States, Hong Kong, Cina and more) with diverse backgrounds, including both language professionals and individuals from academia. 💡 Informative and thought-provoking presentations by experienced and brilliant lecturers on a variety of topics (translation studies and methods of reasearch, corpora for translation, #translationexperts and professional profiles in the #languageindustry, translation technologies and ethical issues, to mention a few). 🙋🏻 Interactive sessions and stimulating discussions both in and outside the classroom, in a friendly athmosphere. 👉🏼 Lecturers who genuinely showed interest in their colleagues’ presentations, quoting each other on several occasions. 📖 Interesting reference material to delve deeper into the different topics, together with session recordings/slides generously provided by the lecturers. ☕ On a lighter note, highly-appreciated coffe breaks (with delicious biscuits and real espresso!) and a final buffet with local cuisine specialties. 🏛️ A beautiful location in picturesque Treviso, always worth visiting (and astonishingly only 5 minutes’ drive from my home!) for a well-organised event, thanks to the local team.👏🏼 💰 As "dirty money" was also mentioned during the conference, overall great value for money! 😊 Last but not least, a pleasant way to spend a week outside and away from my home office, with like-minded people. 💙

#Venice is the Italian City with the Most Swearing, According to Preply Study What is the Italian city where people swear the most? There is no doubt, it's Venice. The city of canals is the place in Italy where more profanities are spoken, an average of 19 times a day. This information comes from a study conducted by #Preply, an online language learning platform, which analyzed colloquial speech in various Italian cities, ultimately crowning Venice as the location with the most swearing. According to this analysis, Italians swear an average of 8.91 times a day, and it is more common among men, who swear 11.6 times compared to women's 6.3 times. Moreover, the use of vulgar expressions and profanities is mostly prevalent among young individuals, specifically those aged between 16 and 24, with an average of 14 swear words per day. How do Italians swear? The study portrays a diverse Italy, both in terms of the targets of swearing and the places where it is used. Italians mostly swear against themselves (21.07%) or hurl imprecations without a specific target (17.27%), likely using them as interjections in casual conversations. The "preferred targets" include friends (17.17%), colleagues (11.22%), partners (10.83%), strangers (9.17%), siblings (7.80%), and parents (5.46%). Certain places and contexts make Italians more likely to use vulgar expressions: it happens often at home (34.05%) but also in the company of friends (17.46%). Other situations that put Italians to the test are at work, with 16.98% of respondents admitting to using swearing in the office, and during driving, especially when stuck in traffic (16.78%). In any case, there are situations where Italians try to avoid any vulgar expressions as much as possible: they restrain themselves, especially in the presence of children (78.31%) or their superiors (74.71%).
