How to help victims of deadly flooding in Kentucky
PIKEVILLE COUPLE DOING ITS PART. I DECIDED TO TAKE ANGEL HERE ON A VALENTINE’S DAY DATE TO LOUISVILLE, JUST TO VISIT. THEIR QUIK TRIP TO CELEBRATE LOVE TURNED TO MOURNING LOSS AS DEADLY FLOODS RAVAGED ALEC AND ANGEL’S PIKEVILLE COMMUNITY. AGAIN, EVERYONE’S JUST HEARTBROKEN. LIKE THERE’S NOT JUST LIKE SOME HOUSES DESTROYED, BUT ENTIRE COMMUNITIES IN SHAMBLES. THE COUPLE IS BRACING THEMSELVES TO SEE THE DEVASTATION FIRSTHAND WHEN THEY RETURN HOME. BUT THEY’RE NOT DOING SO. EMPTY-HANDED. THEY’LL TRAVEL BACK WITH DONATIONS THEY’VE COLLECTED TO HELP OTHER FAMILIES. SO WE FIGURED SINCE WE’RE KIND OF FAR AWAY FROM ALL OF THAT, THAT THE SUPPLIES HERE WILL BE MORE IN STOCK THAN THEIRS. SO WHEN NEIGHBORS ARE IN NEED, IT’S ALL HANDS ON DECK. AND THERE ARE SEVERAL LOCAL RELIEF EFFORTS IN PLACE WITH MANY OF THE ORGANIZERS THAT I SPOKE WITH HAVING ALSO RESPONDED TO THE 2022 FLOODS IN SHELBYVILLE, SLUGGERS PARADISE IS HELPING COVER THE BASES WITH A DONATION DRIVE. THE YOUTH SOFTBALL CLUB AND TRAINING CENTER ARE MEETING THE NEEDS IN EASTERN KENTUCKY LIKE THEY DID THREE YEARS AGO, RAISING THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS AND FILLING TRAILERS WITH SUPPLIES, BROOMS, SHOVELS, BUCKETS. I MEAN, THE LIST COULD GO ON, BUT ANYTHING WOULD BE BENEFICIAL FOR THESE PEOPLE BECAUSE THEY LITERALLY LOST EVERYTHING THAT THEY HAVE. FOR CO-OWNERS CASEY AND FARREN, THIS IS PERSONAL BECAUSE APPALACHIA IS HOME. LOUISVILLE ATTORNEY CAITLIN KIDD, ALSO A NATIVE, IS SHOWING UP AGAIN FOR HER RESILIENT COMMUNITY, ORGANIZING A RELIEF DRIVE AT HER PRACTICE. KENTUCKY ELDER LAW. THEY JOKE, COME HELL OR HIGH WATER, WE’RE GOING TO TAKE CARE OF EACH OTHER. OFFICIALS SAY WATER, PERSONAL HYGIENE PRODUCTS, CLEANING SUPPLIES AND MEDICAL SUPPLIES ARE SOME OF THE GREATEST NEEDS, SO WE CAN EXPECT TO SEE NATIONAL, STATE AND LOCAL PARTNERS MOBILIZING TO AID IN DISASTER RECOVERY. IN THE WEEKS, MONTHS AND YEARS AHEAD. WE’RE STILL REBUILDING FROM 2022. WE NEED THAT SUPPORT AND HELP
