One of the core principles of Scrum, an Agile framework, is that you make decisions based on empirical evidence. However, what is empirical evidence? Simply you make decisions based on observation, experience or experimentation. NOT based on predictions, theory or a gut feeling. This makes sense but also one the biggest blockers to Scrum/Agile adoption. This means you can't tell a senior stakeholder how long a product will take to build before you've started building it, because you don't have any data on experienced complexity, team velocity or user interaction. The so called #VanityMetrics! Indeed, you should run away of “only” measure those, unless you are in a transformation process to scale-up, where they can help the team to define a baseline to compare with along the journey. Every metric has its purpose, and no metric can be understood or evaluated without the rest, not even the outcome ones. Business is a complex elephant and so the metrics you use shall be complex animals as well. Sometimes, having more income (due new deals or more users acquire for example) does not mean you are doing well, hence you need to consider to have a look at other metrics such as talent retention, innnovation, how long it takes to deliver new solutions and so on. All depends on how mature the organisation is and every stage will have its key metrics to assess based on the Vision, strategy and goals.
