The Scrum Anti-Patterns Guide: Challenges Every Scrum Team Faces and How to Overcome Them (The Professional Scrum Series) 1st Edition
Purchase options and add-ons
Unlock Scrum success for beginners and experts alike with The Scrum Anti-Patterns Guide, your key to understanding and elevating Scrum practices.
Scrum is simple to understand but difficult to master. As a framework, Scrum is particularly challenging as there is no formal education tailored to these roles and no comprehensive set of practices readily available to those interested in applying it. The Scrum Guide 2020 describes its underlying principles only in the broadest strokes--from applying Scrum to complex adaptive problems to embracing self-management--but the Scrum Guide is not at all prescriptive about how Scrum Teams work.
The Scrum Anti-Patterns Guide compiles the most common challenges that every Scrum Team faces and how to remedy them. Stefan Wolpers uses the Scrum Guide as a template to structure the content, thus supporting the junior practitioner’s Scrum discovery journey (categorized by roles, events, artifacts, and commitments) while allowing the more experienced reader to use the book to reference individual problems or situations.
- Addresses Scrum anti-patterns for both novices and experienced practitioners
- Offers actionable insights into why Scrum implementations fall short and how to improve
- Covers real-time course corrections and improvements in Scrum practice
Maximize Scrum success with this quick reference to the most common Scrum anti-patterns and how to resolve them.
"Stefan Wolpers has a remarkable ability to highlight underlying traps and issues for stakeholders, teams, and process. Wolpers documents sources of waste and frustration, an amazing compendium of typical ways progress becomes blocked. Depressing! He doesn’t leave us there though. He also recommends insightful remedies. Uplifting!"
--Diana Larsen, speaker, advisor, author, and co-developer of the Agile Fluency® Model

- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2024This book is an essential read for anyone working in Agile environments. The book offers clear, practical insights into common pitfalls teams face when implementing and practicing Scrum, and provides actionable strategies to overcome them that you can quickly adapt to your team. Its straightforward approach and real-world examples make it a valuable resource for both new and experienced practitioners. I find myself revisiting it often, as its guidance is both relevant and effective for continuous improvement in Scrum practices.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2024This new book from Stefan has been in the making for a long time. He has worked with dozens of Scrum Teams and has collected a list of tips for what to do to help the teams improve, and - especially important - what not to do. The anti-patterns are behaviors, practices, and activities that Scrum teams do, and they should not be doing.
In reading this book I discovered how common some of these anti-patterns are. Stefan provides an explanation of what's wrong, and gives advice on what to do to improve.
Overall, this is a great book for every Scrum Master's library and for anyone interested in learning how to help a team succeed with Scrum, while avoiding the typical traps.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for those using Scrum
I cannot speak more highly about this book. In absence of experience, this book can be your friend in navigating specific challenges (anti-patterns) when using Scrum. It’s tactical. Just grab what you need.
Well done Stefan Wolpers!

5.0 out of 5 stars The magic to unlock your dysfunctions
IMHO, this is a must read book for anyone working in a Scrum ecosystem. It depicts the real-time issues faced in a typical scrum team/environment. The book succinctly captures the anti-patterns(pitfalls,traps) across events, artifacts and the accountabilities and also helps us in understanding the finer nuances in handling these anti-patterns.
While this is a great book to have for any Scrum practitioner, I personally felt that this is really a wonderful collection to have for a Scrum Master or an Agile coach. It helps as a platform to augument your thought process while dealing with any particular dysfunction. This is what i found out. A great book indeed!!
