My Thoughts and More on Abounding Hope by Cindy Kay Stewart

About the Book

Book: Abounding Hope

Author: Cindy Kay Stewart

Genre: Historical Christian Romance (WWII)

Release date: October, 2023

Poland’s looming defeat forces an American teacher to escape with children wanted by the Nazis.

It’s late August, 1939, and the world is on the brink of war. The Nazis are threatening Poland, but American teacher Irena Simmons refuses to flee to safety. She’s dedicated her life to serving in her church and school, and she’s watching over the little German boys she whisked to safety the year before. When her former classmate, Jonathan, surprises her in Lvov and insists she leave with him before the war starts, Irena balks. Nothing will interfere with her work—especially a man making demands.

American shipping magnate Jonathan Huntwell had a crush on Irena in school. When their former classmates select him to travel to Poland and escort her out before it’s too late, he doesn’t expect the inner turmoil she ignites in him. Although honor-bound to aid any friend in trouble, Jonathan acknowledges that Irena is more than an obligation to him. However, he must keep his feelings hidden, or he’ll jeopardize their friendship.

Irena soon discovers that the Gestapo agent she successfully evaded in Germany has found her in Poland, and he’s after her young charges. When the Germans invade, Jonathan is in Denmark on business, too far away to help. As the rising danger threatens everything Irena holds dear, she must find a way to protect those she loves.

Based on true events and backed by extensive research, Abounding Hope is sure to delight fans of WWII adventure cloaked in sweet romance. Come to the place where the war began and discover hope in the darkest places.

My Thoughts:

I had so many emotions reading this story. From the beginning it started with relief, then quickly switched to dreaded anticipation, fear, unbelief, and finally just hoping our characters make it out alive.

This story of Irena and Jonathan is one of perseverance, self-sacrifice, and of hope. Irena, though, was a stubborn woman and oftentimes, especially in the beginning irritated me. She was so stubborn that she refused to see that she and her young charges were no longer safe in Poland, and there were plenty of clues. She needed to leave with Jonathan as he begged her too. But no, she had to learn the hard way. Circumstances were going to get her to leave no matter what.

This was a tale of survival, love, and friendships. A lot was going on and even for a long book, it became a quick read as it was hard to put down. This is the first in the series and I am looking forward to continuing the story, especially since it is about Irena's sister, who has lost so much already. A World War II story with an apt title for its name, abounding with hope.

More from Cindy

WWII is a fascinating time period—so many miracles took place in the midst of great tragedy. There has never been an era of history when so many people sacrificed so much to save the world from evil.

During my research for Abounding Hope, I uncovered many interesting and nearly unbelievable stories from the beginning of the war. Within the context of historical fiction, I had the opportunity to recast these true events through the lives of my fictional characters. I endeavored to remain true to history throughout the book, even with dates and places. None of the historical events and places in Abounding Hope are fictional.

Abounding Hope is set in Poland and Hungary at the beginning of WWII. The main characters, Jonathan and Irena, are Americans who have lived in Europe most of their lives. They’re also civilians who learn to surrender their expectations and trust the Lord through their harrowing experiences. In the end, they also find love. Their romance adds soft and intriguing elements to a story set during such a difficult time in history.

My Thoughts and More on A Spring at the Greenbrier by Sandra Merville Hart

About the Book

Book: A Spring at the Greenbrier

Author: Sandra Merville Hart

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Release Date: April 30, 2024

Marilla will sacrifice anything for her family. So when her sister’s doctor suggests daily sulphur spring baths, an amenity her family could never afford, Marilla takes a job at The Greenbrier resort bathhouse in order to give her sister the care she needs. When her sister befriends another girl staying at the resort with a similar health condition, Marilla finds herself crossing paths with the girl’s handsome, charming, older brother. And despite their growing attraction to each other, courting Wes must remain a dream. After all, resort staff cannot court guests and Marilla will not risk her sister’s health for her own happiness.

Wealthy resort guest, Wes Bakersfield, has dreams for a future and plans to make his family’s business his own. And while he finds himself drawn to Marilla, despite their differing social classes, he can’t help but wonder if she is really interested in him, or in his wealth.

Can the couple find the trust to help their love succeed, or will their differences pull them apart?

My Thoughts:

Welcome to the Greenbrier located in West Virginia. This is another resort book that dates back to the Gilded ages, and this one is still taking reservations. I enjoyed reading this historical book, then taking a tour of the resort's web pages.

In this story we have a young woman, Marilla, who works very hard for everyone else but never puts herself first. It is just her mother and little sister, Katie who has polio. Marilla works six days a week at the bath house of the resort, where it is said the Sulphur springs can help in healing. Is it really helping her sister, Marilla doesn't know. But for the sake of her mother and Katie, she prays it will. It has brought another unexpected blessing though.

Wes's little sister deals with the pain of arthritis. Upon her doctor's orders, she goes to the resort springs that does bring her much relief. That is where his sister, Ina meets her new best friend, Katie. And he meets Marilla. As they develop a friendship, their families become quite close as well. However, is Marilla as good as she seems, or is she only after his wealth.

The class difference between Marilla and Wes, a businessman looking to expand into the automobile business, is one of the forces that may keep them apart. This was an enjoyable read to see how Wes's family was a little bit different than other wealthy patrons. But at the same time, they did need to be careful of those who only sought what they could take from them.

I found Marilla's thought process about herself somewhat sad. She did all she could do, but it never seemed to be enough, nor did anyone really look out for her. Would she ever find her dreams being fulfilled, maybe the ones that refused to die? How many times do we let life's overwhelming odds weigh us down?

More from Sandra

In A Spring at The Greenbrier, Book 7 in Romance at the Gilded Age Resorts Series, Marilla, our heroine, is as desperate as her mother to find healing for her younger sister’s polio. When the doctor recommends daily bathing in the sulphur springs, her family cannot afford the cost. Marilla transfers to the bath wing at The Greenbrier where her new boss allows her to bring her sister at the end of each day after the guests have finished their bathing sessions. It makes for a long day yet the sacrifice is worth her exhaustion if the springs can help her ten-year-old sister.

The Greenbrier, a beautiful and elegant resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, first received its fame from healthy benefits of drinking the sulphur springs and bathing in its waters.

Both the hero and heroine in A Spring at The Greenbrier have younger sisters who can benefit from heated spring baths.

The bulk of my research for this story was for the springs and what illnesses benefit from them. I had to discover the illnesses for which doctors recommended the baths historically.

Soothing soaks in hot springs are recommended even today. They can boost blood circulation, reduce pain, improve skin conditions, reduce stress, decrease inflammation in joints, and detoxify the body.

Most resort guests in the early days drank tumblers of the water before each meal. A resort doctor in the 1800s cautioned taking a maximum of 12 glasses daily. Health benefits for the bowels, liver, kidneys, and skin most often appeared between three to six weeks. The resort began to sell it in bottles at drug stores. It was labelled as A Natural Laxative.

Major renovations were done by new owners for a grand reopening in September of 1913. Marilla, our heroine, begins working at the Women’s Department of the new bath wing. Female guests enjoyed heated sulphur spring baths in bathing rooms. Doctors sent their wealthy patients to the springs with a recommended regimen of bathing that might also include drinking the spring water. The temperature of the water, the frequency, and the length of the baths were set by their doctor.

Folks suffering from a variety of ailments sought benefits from the spring waters, including gout, rheumatism, arthritis, neuritis, dyspepsia, jaundice, scurvy, hay fever, malaria, bronchitis, asthma, and chronic diseases of the skin, stomach, bowels, and liver.

Mineral waters can harm people with aneurisms in the heart and large arteries, cancer, tubercular consumption, and some brain complaints.

The springs were of great benefit for folks suffering from chronic complaints. These benefits happened so gradually that patients started to feel better “without being able to account for it.”

So there were a lot of conditions to choose from for my two ailing girls in my story.

A Spring at The Greenbrier is a nostalgic story set in 1914. I invite you to read the whole series!

My Thoughts on Leaning on Air by Cheryl Grey Bostrom

About:

They last spoke as teens . . .

But on a country road twelve years later, a surprise encounter reunites ornithologist Celia Burke with veterinary surgeon Burnaby Hayes, and they plunge into the most unusual romance of her life.

After a decade of marriage, Celia and Burnaby have found a unique and beautiful rhythm. Then tragedy strikes while Celia hunts for the nest of a research hawk near the Snake River. Reeling with grief, she’s certain Burnaby won’t understand her anguish or forgive the choice that initiated it.

She flees to kindness at a remote farm in Washington’s Palouse region, where a wild prairie and an alluring neighbor convince her to begin anew. But when unexplained accidents, cryptic sketches, and a mute little boy make her doubt her decision, only a red-tailed hawk and the endangered lives of those she loves can compel her to examine her past—and reconsider her future.

A soaring tale of wonder, loss, redemption, and restoration from Cheryl Grey Bostrom, the award-winning author of Sugar Birds.

  • A beautifully crafted story set in the Pacific Northwest that brings the setting to life.
  • A compelling contemporary novel about love and loss.
  • Explores the challenges of a marriage when one partner is on the autism spectrum.
  • Includes discussion questions for book clubs
My Thoughts:

This is the first novel I have read by author Bostrom. I have not read Sugar Birds yet. However, after reading and enjoying this one, it is going on my tbr. I was very intrigued with this story due to it following a married couple's relationship. Not an ordinary married couple, but a couple where the husband has autism. Burnaby, Burn for short, was an interesting character to get inside the head of. He was matter of fact, took things literally, and yet he tried to fit in the social world the best he could with learning techniques to deal with his odd tendencies and ticks. He was also brilliant, and he loved his Celia with intensity. They way he described their relationship and being together scientifically, was stunning.

Celia has a hard time of it, especially since her mother left her and her father when she was young. She had looked for love and acceptance in all the wrong arms, and when Burn steps back into her life, she knows he sees her for her. She also knows how difficult it will be at times as they teach each other how to love one another. Then tragedy strikes and it is more than Celia can bear. So, she does what she used to do, runs away and walls herself up.

Celia and Burn had a lot to work through together and on their own. This was at times a heartbreaking read, as it does discuss abandonment, miscarriage, and broken families. However, it is also an uplifting read especially where a marriage is involved. I am glad there are books out there that show marriage as a living, breathing entity of its own, and the fragility of it as well. There was much to take away from this novel.

My Thoughts on The Elusive Truth of Lily Temple

About:

In the search for the truth, the line between fact and fiction is beginning to fall out of focus

It is 1903, and Lily Temple is a beautiful silent-film actress who spins fairy tales and plays frivolous roles in front of the cine-camera. But beneath the costumes and stage makeup is a woman with a quick wit, a murky past, and a tantalizing secret.

Underground investigator to the wealthy, Peter Driscoll has been tasked with locating the legendary Briarwood Teardrop, an exquisite sapphire that has been missing for years--and which Lily happens to be wearing beneath her gown. In order to stay close to her and unravel the mystery, Peter employs the enchanting actress's help on a case.

But as they are investigating together, Peter is also investigating Lily. The closer he gets to the truth, the more danger they face. And the closer he gets to Lily, the clearer it becomes that he needs her even more than she needs him.

My Thoughts:

This was such a unique novel, in that it read like a mystery mixed with a fairytale. Lily Temple is a character that has many, many layers that needs to be pulled back. She is a silent film actress in 1903 and she herself is a mystery. The first meeting we have with her is her wanting to tell her story. And what a story it is. There is so much to unpack in this novel. We have her love interest, Peter Driscoll who is a solicitor that makes a living finding lost things and people. Besides helping Lily find out who she is and what her story is, there is the lost jewel he has been tasked to find along with a lost girl and a lost soldier.

Lily is looking for a storyteller that helped her when she was growing up. She has been running from her life for a very long time. Peter has a special gift in that he can get people to open up to him. He listens and asks the right questions. Through Peter, Lily might just begin to live her life again and maybe even connect her with the True Storyteller.

I enjoyed all the various book quotes at the beginning of the chapters. I also liked how the importance of story was a relevant theme throughout. How stories teach lessons, show empathy, and help some work through their problems because they can see the situation in a different light. This was a special, magical-like story that I was very caught up in.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

My Thoughts and More on The Sleuth of Blackfriars Lane by Michelle Griep

About the Book

Book: The Sleuth of Blackfriars Lane

Author: Michelle Griep

Genre: Historical Christian Fiction

Release Date: April, 2024

Wife. Mother. Homemaker. Detective. Kit Forge wears many hats, and if that’s not enough, she’s partnered with her father to open a new detective agency. It’s hard to be all things to all people, but Kit never shies away from the impossible. Despite her hard work and good intentions, some things fall through the cracks.

Namely, her husband.

But Jackson barely notices. He’s too busy putting out his own fires. As the new chief inspector of a busy London station, he must salvage the disaster left behind by the former police chief—an obstacle made all the harder when the superintendent breathes an ultimatum down his neck.

Against her father’s advice, Kit takes on a case involving a missing child, one in which she and Jackson become a little too emotionally involved. . .and end up endangering their own little girl in the process.

Can Kit and Jackson learn that just because they can say yes doesn’t mean they should?

Click here to get your copy!

My Thoughts:

I have really been enjoying this series and I am so glad that we get a whole book about Kit and Jackson and their baby girl, Bella, and how they are managing their lives. Especially now that Kit and her father have opened their own detective agency and along with this new venture, they do have some growing and trusting to do as father and daughter. Not only that, but Kit is especially wrestling with her role as a mother and a detective. The author shows Kit's feelings, doubts, and wavering's as most mothers are faced with these choices. Kit's first case is not helping matters in the self-doubt she is struggling with at all either.

Jackson is not having a real easy time of it either. His job is being threatened if he does not figure out the mess that the former police chief left. Paperwork upon paperwork needs to be sorted in two weeks' time, and the crime in the city will not slow down for even that. I did really like how supportive and protective Jackson was of Kit's endeavor outside the home, but he also was not going to put up with her endangering herself. It was a good balance of character for him, supportive yet reasonable.

We do get another love story with Inspector Charles Baggett and the widow Martha Jones and her seven children. I enjoyed their caring and banter with one another. If only they will open their eyes and see just how perfect they are for one another.

This story has is all, mystery, danger, family love, romance, and firm resolves and unbreakable wills. This one of my favorite series.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

More from Michelle

Oh Inspiration…Wherefore Art Thou?

There are several questions I am asked frequently as an author.

“Hey, how much money do you make?”

“Can you help me get my book published?”

“How come it takes you so long to finish a story?”

But probably the most common query is this: what sorts of things inspire you? Now that is a question I can go on and on about! Don’t panic, though. I’ll be brief.

Story ideas come from every place imaginable. I’ve had plot thoughts from watching kids’ movies or even from eavesdropping at a coffee shop (note: beware what you say in public). TV series are also a favorite of mine, so much so that my latest release, The Sleuth of Blackfriars Lane, is loosely based on one of my all-time favorite PBS series.

Have you seen this show? If not, do yourself a favor and ride that pony. If you have, then you know what I’m talking about. Either way, you should know that, the main character, is a detective in Victorian London—a very sassy yet classy lady. And that’s what struck me light a lightning bolt.

This woman is Kit, the heroine in my Blackfriars series, like right there on the big screen.

So, for book III, I decided I’d let ol’ Kit open her own private investigation agency with the help of her father, a recently retired police sergeant. Of course much intrigue and chaos ensues, just like in my all-time favorite PBS series, bringing the Blackfriars series to a satisfying end.

Inspiration honestly comes from anywhere, so next time you’re rubbing elbows with an author, beware. You just might end up as a character in their next book.

My Thoughts:

I have really been looking forward to this next addition in the Brothers of Sapphire Ranch series. I have been so curious about Naomi Wyatt's life, as she travels pregnant with her sister to the Coulter ranch. Who is her former beau, Eric LaGrange, and why hasn't he contacted her with any news? Well Naomi now has a little girl whom she needs to care for, and Jonah Coulter has asked for her hand in marriage. Naomi has said yes, if only to have a man to protect her and her little girl. Then Eric shows up at the ranch. Things get pretty interesting very fast.

Eric has been searching for Naomi for a long while. He has written to her, but she has never answered him back. He knows he did wrong with her taking liberties he shouldn't have before they were married, but he never expected she would leave him, or keep his child from him. But he is here now, and he will show Naomi, and everyone else that he will be a good father. If only he and Jonah will keep civil. Eric still loves Naomi, but he is willing to let her go and marry Jonah if that is what she wishes.

Naomi, even from the last book, was hesitant to marry Jonah, as she was still in love with Eric. But what happened to keep him from her? Plenty of danger and secrets unfold throughout this story until everyone has the answers they seek. This was a thrilling story of two good men and the drama that unfolds when the woman they both love needs to choose between them. Don't miss this exciting continuation.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

More from Misty

Storytelling vs. Historical Authenticity?

I’ve been a fan of historical fiction for as long as I can remember, all the way back to the Mandie books by Lois Gladys Leppard and the Sadie Rose books by Hilda Stahl. Does anyone remember those series?

When I started thinking about my first novel, there was no doubt it would be a Christian Historical Romance set in the west. By my second book in, I had narrowed my focus to frontier life in the Rockies. My happy place!

It can be challenging to write about a time I haven’t experienced and cultures that don’t exist in the same form anymore. I love reading first-hand accounts to help me bring a particular time period to life. I often visit historic forts and talk with those who have studied the time period and setting in greater depth.

Three years ago, My family and I set out on a 28-day epic road trip to tour many of the state and national parks across the country. We spent about half of our time in Wyoming and Montana, exploring Yellowstone and Glacier, and tour historic and ghost towns. We spent more than one night tent camping in primitive camping!

These experiences definitely make it easy for me to slip into that world as I write. The characters come alive in my mind, and I see the story like a movie in my head. Writing Earning the Mountain Man’s Trust was especially fun to write, as we return to the Coulter Ranch. I fell in love with not just Naomi and Eric, but also sweet little Mary Ellen, their one-year-old daughter who Eric meets for the first time in this book.

I pray the story comes to life for readers as much as it has for me! J

Blessings!

Misty
