I finally changed my profile location from "Greater New York" to "Greater Boston," and I wonder about the impact. I was dragging my feet 🦶 on this actually. People know me as someone from the New York 🌆 area, so will they still find me? I do have a common name, so location is a factor for me in search results. But now that I am here, I decided not to procrastinate any longer. The funny thing is that I started here in Boston. This is where I was born and raised as a young child. I moved BECAUSE I can work from anywhere and will now be closer to family. I have my laptop, zoom, and close access to Boston's #Logan ✈️ 🛫 Airport. How much does location matter to you? Does it impact your opportunities anymore? Have you moved due to covid like me? I want to know what you think about the importance of location for YOUR opportunities? #opportunities #Boston #location #SandraLong

Sandra Long , I moved from the deserts of Arizona to the islands of Washington earlier this year. I'm still amazed at how closely the logistics of our move mirrored yours! The older I get, the more I'm aware of how important my environment is to my well being. As an Arizona native, I had strong ties and an appreciation for the state and my relationships there. But I was also staying put in default mode. The Pacific Northwest has been a travel destination for years, to my "happy place," so moving here with intention has been a wake up call. I've never felt so at home. And I took a play out of your book, and I just changed my location to the Greater Seattle area. That makes a lot more sense than choosing the small town I live in. Thanks for the tips and thought provoking questions!

Interesting question! After fleeing mid-pandemic from Toronto to Victoria, it took me almost two years to change my profile location. I only did it because LinkedIn prompted me to update it when I started a new job. I moved for for the same reasons as you and found my skills and experience are valued here on Vancouver Island. Hope you’re well, Sandra. I enjoy your posts and newsletter. Keep up the great work.

Great question, Sandra Long! 👍 I think location is important for opportunities. I am based in Bucharest, Romania, and if we are talking about opportunities I can pursue from this location, I would say they could be limited to the region, regardless of the fact that the quality of my services would be higher than of a local provider. This happens mainly because of perceptions. However, I haven't tried to change my LinkedIn profile location, even if of course, when delivering services virtually, it shouldn't matter. 🌍 #LearningPro 🌎

Terrific! So wonderful you are with your family. I have traveled 18,000+ miles this year, visiting 11 cities , many visiting the fam, and I’ve returned to New York area five times. I’m in Denver now with my kids who are thriving here. I am blessed to work in a hybrid world where I can add value to my clients from anywhere. I hope you are well. Happy holidays.

Sandra Long We moved from Minneapolis to Charleston,SC during COVID. The city doesn’t have as many IT opportunities like Minneapolis, but I believe remote jobs are still available. I’m in transition looking for my next leadership position and believe I’ll land in a great place while enjoying the southern charm. #oppurtunities #opentowork #relocated #remotework

I moved from St Paul, Mn across the border to New Richmond, Wi. Honestly I think it’s narrowed my opportunities even though I am only 45 minutes from St Paul.

You can just call wherever you are, "Greater Sandra Long"...because regardless of your location, no one's "greater" than you! 😉

Doesn’t matter where here is as long as I am here. You just have to show up! Being near a major airport is just as key! BOS does for you what ORD and RSW do for me. Non-stop is better than connecting, but you have to show up in person and not just rely on your screen. 👍☘️😎
