4.8 out of 5 stars 812 ratings

Moose (Arlo) Mulligan's biggest grief propelled him into the world of Search and Rescue. After years as a former Navy Rescue Chopper pilot, he returned home to start Air One Rescue—and made a name for himself. He loves his job, his life, and his routines…which include breakfast at the Skyport, at the table of Tillie Young. She’s sweet, and pretty, but Moose has no room in his life for anything more.

And then, Tillie shows up, beaten and desperate…and needs his help.

Tillie Young never thought her ex would track her to Alaska—but somehow he’s found her, and when he kidnaps her daughter, she’ll do anything to get her back. Even enlist help from her favorite grumpy rescuer at table three, Moose Mulligan.

But Moose is no match for a former MMA boxer, and possible child trafficker, right?

Maybe, maybe not, but he’s not going to let another child go missing on his watch. Worse—when Moose finds himself accused as the kidnapper, there’s no way back. Now, he must find the girl, keep Tillie safe and outwit a man fueled by revenge. It will take all of Moose’s Alaskan savvy to protect them, and keep them alive…but who is going to protect him from the love he never saw coming?

Set in the treacherous Alaskan backwoods, it's a heart-pounding tale of survival, love, and the family Moose never anticipated.

A Promise Is A Promise!
4 out of 5 stars
A Promise Is A Promise!
"My daughter has been kidnapped. And I need your help to get her back." After weeks of wondering where Tillie Young had disappeared to, Moose Mulligan finds the woman who had him daydreaming about the future on the doorstep of his home; bruises and a split lip marring her lovely face. Of course Moose and Alaska Air One Rescue team members are going to help Tillie, it's what they do best. Wait a minute . . . . did she say daughter??? Moose has no idea what kind of trouble Tillie has gotten herself into, but he is fairly certain that she is holding back, not everything about her explanation is adding up . . . . still, Moose goes out on a limb and makes Tillie a promise, "We'll get her back". His heart has sought out Tillie for months now, but it has become increasingly clear that she is carting around a boatload of baggage and her stubborn self-reliance isn't leaving much room for faith. But a promise is a promise. (And . . . . "the answer is always pie".) Filled with a treasure trove of inspirational truths, ("you can't fight without the armor of God", "none of us deserve grace . . . but when we get it, we pass it along") this story begins in the fast lane, races down the straightaway in the blink of an eye, and crosses the finish line with a mere touch of the brakes. . . . thankfully, and perhaps more importantly, it also takes the time for hearts to heal, faith to grow, and love to bloom.

    One Last Promise

    by Susan May Warren

Book 3 in the Alaska Air One Rescue series

    Rating: 4.5/5

Wow! This series keeps getting better and better! The earlier books helped set up this story but it was unnecessary because the author gives great background so you can definitely read as a standalone. However, I still recommend reading the first two books in this series because they are excellent adventure rides. There's something about books set in Alaska that have an added element of suspense and I am here for it. ;) The author has a beautiful way of weaving in her faith to this intense story. I absolutely enjoyed this nonstop thriller with some beautiful characters who share their struggles and triumphs. I also appreciate a story with action, romance and mystery without any cursing or explicit scenes.

Highly recommend this wonderful story of love, redemption and rescue.

My thanks to the author and publisher for providing me with an ARC of the book. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own. No positive review was expected and no compensation received.

Even though I'm a big Susan May Warren fan and have been for years, I have missed her family-oriented stories. These have given way to more plot-driven, action-based books, which are clearly Susie May's passion. I don't fault her at all for switching gears; I hate when other people try to tell me what to write. That said, I did love the way Susie May brought in some of her "roots" with One Last Promise.

Tillie Young's plight engaged me from minute one. As a single mom with a kid under ten, on the run, she had my instant sympathy. The main reason I liked Tillie though, is because she has been victimized, but is not a victim. Nor is she the stereotypical "strong heroine" who has the opposite problem of being unable to open up or be vulnerable or make desperate decisions. Tillie is my favorite heroine in this series so far. She's a great mix of gentleness and grit, determination and desperation. And while she's strong enough to say to others, "I will help you, but I won't tolerate you hurting yourself," she can't relax enough to be rescued, to see how she's hurt or let herself rest. That's a great character arc and it is vintage Susan May Warren.

Hero Moose Mulligan is wonderful, as well. Physically, he is every inch the swoony, masculine hero. Like Tillie, he has a bit of the vintage Susan May Warren "crazy brave" in him. He is the absolute best person to rescue Tillie, but Moose's determination to build a real life with her is what I liked most. Fiction, Christian and secular, needs more heroes like Moose--the kind who are steady, who understand no one escapes this life without baggage, and who says, "I know it's a mess right now, and it'll get messy again. I love you enough, trust you enough, to get through it together." It's absolutely refreshing when a lot of romances, even the good ones, lean more on the hero or heroine working through each other's lies, running from each other's trauma and their own, and that kind of thing.

I also want to commend Susie May's spiritual threads in One Last Promise. First off, she gets major kudos because I can't remember the last time I read a Christian book wherein a character comes out and says they are not a believer. These days, most authors won't touch that--they kind of dance around and say, "Yeah, but they're just lapsed or wishy-washy." Susie May dared to give Tillie a journey where she builds faith from the ground up. Plus, there's no preachiness or word-for-word Gospel presentation or attitudes telling Tillie, Moose, or anyone else, "If you'd trusted God more or at all, this never would've happened." No--these spiritual threads are written like what happens when people meet God where they are, confront their sins or unbelief in the everyday, and actually deal with the question of what faith and hope look like. Bravo, again.

Finally, I want to applaud Susie May's plot choices, or at least the majority. The pacing and the mystery surrounding Tillie enticed me so much, I read 2/3 of the book in one day. As mentioned, Susie May stayed with the story of a single mom trying to protect her kid, and kept explanations of the mystery and danger surrounding the characters simple. This makes the suspense threads more relatable than some of her others, which are still good but often stray too far into jargon, global implications, and other plotlines that can steal time from real character development. I also liked how the suspenseful threads were written so that Tillie, a highly trained, courageous Marine, was still believable as a scared single mom. Meanwhile, the scared single mom was still believable as a highly trained, courageous Marine.

Moose and Tillie can lean two-dimensional at times, as is a hazard of a plot-driven book, so not too many points off there. I will admit though, I wanted to know them more deeply. I know part of that is because of the setup with Shep and London, but honestly, as much as I love a double romance, this type is starting to wear on me a bit.

I'm also unsure about some of Moose and Tillie's decisions during the plot. Now, I'm the first one to say that doing what's morally right is more important than what's legally right (ideally, those two should match, but it's the world we live in). And knowing what I eventually learned about Rigger, I could completely understand Tillie's anxiety, hopelessness, and choices. Nor did I expect her to act like a believer when she wasn't.

Yet, something about how Moose and Tillie's decisions were written and paced...it's difficult to put my finger on, but something just felt a little off. As in, I could understand Tillie's need to run. Yet I kept wondering, why would she outright reject sanctuary every time it was offered? The setup and motivations, as good as they were, didn't quite match that payoff. Maybe it was because Rigger reads like too much of a detached villain, too much of a "regular" guy (which yes, is a front, but his front seems too good). Or maybe it was because the book spends little to no real time with Hazel, or Hazel and Tillie as mother-daughter. We know they're close, but Hazel sometimes reads like she's just "there." And, this is a nitpick, but I couldn't quite get behind a serious villain named Rigger. I'm aging myself, but that's a cartoon lackey from Captain Planet.

Those mild to moderate issues aside, One Last Promise is in fact the best of this series so far. It makes me look forward to One Last Stand, which I did not anticipate doing. If you want an action-packed summer read that's still down to earth and focused on average citizens, this is the book for you.

Some books meander, winding slowly to an easily guessed conclusion. Not this one! It soars and dives and takes the reader through one thrilling event after another, all the while teaching about and worshipping the One True God who loves us!

Well written, this one has energy and an expert handle on grammar and all aspects of writing.

My two words for this book are faith and trust. Tillie is not just a waitress. She is trying to protect her daughter Hazel and this is how she came to be in Alaska. When someone from Tillie's past shows up trying to take Hazel and saying he is her father, Moose and the Air One Rescue team jump into action for a different type of rescue. Moose must learn to put his faith into action and trust God. Tillie needs to come to faith and realize she can trust God to bring her through. This is an action packed story with some awesome plot twists you won't see coming. You also get a teaser about Sheep and London's story which is in book four of the series. Susan May Warren has effortlessly woven faith and trust into this story and if you like Christian romantic suspense you will enjoy this book. I suggest reading the series in order as the stories build on the previous stories.

Absolutely adored this book! From the beginning of the series, I was so excited to read more about Tillie and Moose‘s relationship. Susie May did not disappoint, love the complexity and backstory of the characters and the way the books sets up for Shep and London‘s relationship as well. Go get yourself a copy friends!

I love Susan May Warren’s books and this was exceptional! The twists and turns as we discover more about the characters kept me guessing and gave just enough foreshadowing to make it all make sense without giving anything away. The characters are unique and I loved how their inner struggles (along with many surprises in their backgrounds) developed through the course of this book!
