The Sleuth of Blackfriars Lane by Michelle Grip (Blackfriars Lane #3)

About the Book

Book: The Sleuth of Blackfriars Lane

Author: Michelle Griep

Genre: Historical Christian Fiction

Release Date: April, 2024

Wife. Mother. Homemaker. Detective. Kit Forge wears many hats, and if that’s not enough, she’s partnered with her father to open a new detective agency. It’s hard to be all things to all people, but Kit never shies away from the impossible. Despite her hard work and good intentions, some things fall through the cracks.

Namely, her husband.

But Jackson barely notices. He’s too busy putting out his own fires. As the new chief inspector of a busy London station, he must salvage the disaster left behind by the former police chief—an obstacle made all the harder when the superintendent breathes an ultimatum down his neck.

Against her father’s advice, Kit takes on a case involving a missing child, one in which she and Jackson become a little too emotionally involved. . .and end up endangering their own little girl in the process.

Can Kit and Jackson learn that just because they can say yes doesn’t mean they should?

My Review:

This is the third book in the series. I have to state that I'm fond of this series and this book was so much fun! I was thrilled to find Kit and Jackson opening their own PI-style business so that Kit can do what she's good at doing. Kit and Jackson's romance continues into married life and is so lovely. Little Belle is still young and I relate to Kit with cooking being so much of a challenge! Everything I loved about the prior books, it's here and there's even more of it. There are two romances, danger and suspense, and most of all, wit and such a good, well-written story! Faith is never left out with this author, and I am so fond of how realistic her characters are. I couldn't wait to read this story and it's easily a five-star read.

More from Michelle

Oh Inspiration…Wherefore Art Thou?

There are several questions I am asked frequently as an author.

“Hey, how much money do you make?”

“Can you help me get my book published?”

“How come it takes you so long to finish a story?”

But probably the most common query is this: what sorts of things inspire you? Now that is a question I can go on and on about! Don’t panic, though. I’ll be brief.

Story ideas come from every place imaginable. I’ve had plot thoughts from watching kids’ movies or even from eavesdropping at a coffee shop (note: beware what you say in public). TV series are also a favorite of mine, so much so that my latest release, The Sleuth of Blackfriars Lane, is loosely based on one of my all-time favorite PBS series.

Have you seen this show? If not, do yourself a favor and ride that pony. If you have, then you know what I’m talking about. Either way, you should know that, the main character, is a detective in Victorian London—a very sassy yet classy lady. And that’s what struck me light a lightning bolt.

This woman is Kit, the heroine in my Blackfriars series, like right there on the big screen.

So, for book III, I decided I’d let ol’ Kit open her own private investigation agency with the help of her father, a recently retired police sergeant. Of course much intrigue and chaos ensues, just like in my all-time favorite PBS series, bringing the Blackfriars series to a satisfying end.

Inspiration honestly comes from anywhere, so next time you’re rubbing elbows with an author, beware. You just might end up as a character in their next book.

My Review:

The second book in a series, but this can stand alone. The author did a great job of filling in things at the start of the book. Otherwise, it connects just fine and we pick up with Mark, and his very happy life. Finally, he's got it all going well. His job is good, he's starting a new family, and things look like smooth "normal" sailing. Does that honestly ever really last? Not for Mark, because here comes trouble. Jess and Mark are helping with two little boys who need care, in addition to the fact that Jess is expecting a baby. With both of them having been FBI agents, they aren't stupid concerning dumb risks, but that isn't stopping things from happening. This story has romance, children, suspense, danger, faith, hope, love, and a full range of emotions as they deal with grief and loss from the past as well as trying to have a secure and healthy future. Over and over again their steps are guided by God, as they find themselves in places and situations they didn't anticipate.

I found this to be a very strong read and it passed my expectations that I had from the cover and description.

When she’s not wearing one of her many hats, you’ll find her tucked away with a book and what’s likely her third coffee of the day.

More from Jennifer

The Lost and Found is the second book of the No Matter What series but can be read as a standalone. I needed to make sure my characters were happy and healthy after their adventures in the book one so the day I sent No Matter What to my editor, I started writing The Lost and Found.

I love to bake and when I was pregnant with our daughter, I craved all things sweet. One of the characters in the book has a similar craving so I created a recipe for her to enjoy. I’d love to share it with you.

Mama by F. E. Birch

This is an Overview Media Review

Maman - a twisted suspense novel

DS Joanna Armstrong, a top child protection detective, becomes the accused when one of her twin babies develops facial bruising - sending her into a spiraling post-natal psychosis.

Her life falls apart in an instant. Her team is torn, the doctors think she’s fabricating her illness, and even one of her own colleagues appears hell-bent on destroying her.

Can Joanna clear her name when everything seems stacked against her? Can she break through all the prejudice before time runs out? Or is she really mad like they all say?

Maman is a gripping tale of family, loyalty, and integrity, but most of all, truth and justice.

My Review:

Joanna is a new mom, to twins. Baby Robert and Lucy. Being a new mom is hard, but something else is happening. Joanna is having memory issues. How do you forget you're a mom? How did her little girl get injured? Why would a new mom have these issues? More so how do you wind up racing about screaming that babies are abandoned, your babies, and you just so happen to be the DS for Child Protection? Wow! This book was powerful, very good, and different from many other stories that you might think are similar. I really enjoyed the insight and effort that was worked into this story, and the ending.

F.E. Birch is an ex-cop from the North East but she’s not a Geordie. She is a prolific short story writer with a trail of pseudonyms and publications behind her. With a penchant for dark, deep, and the disturbing, her crimes are rarely cozy. She has self-published two collections of competition-winning short stories and her debut novel, She’s Not There was published in early 2023 by Red Dragon. She is also published by Harper Collins (2013) with stories about being an undercover cop …

With a bendy EDS body, GSOH, and a tad clumsy, she wears many hats and loves wigs. Her friends call her Effie.

 My Review:

Sofie is an amazing character. She's a writer, so I have to love her, right? She's smart and has a fantastic imagination, as you would expect from a writer. Then, through the fog of working on books all the time, there are the news neighbors and, well, something is off. It's really off, but what? Why is it off? Why should she even be concerned with these people? That's when things start going crazy. Are they into drugs or trafficking, or what twist is next? This story, it's so engaging. It flips from a cozy feeling to a serious crime story feeling and back and forth until I lost sleep reading. Burke is the strong silent type, or is he? He grew on me during the story. Add in the old mansion, and the mysteries of this book, with faith included, and this story gets five stars from me.
