Louisa Clark is an ordinary girl living an exceedingly ordinary life—steady boyfriend, close family—who has barely been farther afield than their tiny village. She takes a badly needed job working for ex–Master of the Universe Will Traynor, who is wheelchair bound after an accident. Will has always lived a huge life—big deals, extreme sports, worldwide travel—and now he’s pretty sure he cannot live the way he is.

Will is acerbic, moody, bossy—but Lou refuses to treat him with kid gloves, and soon his happiness means more to her than she expected. When she learns that Will has shocking plans of his own, she sets out to show him that life is still worth living.

A Love Story for this generation and perfect for fans of John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars, Me Before You brings to life two people who couldn’t have less in common—a heartbreakingly romantic novel that asks, What do you do when making the person you love happy also means breaking your own heart?

I would rate this book a five out of five, this book was very well written and kept me engaged at all times. The story is about a girl named “Lou” Louisa Clark who lives in Small-town England, in her little village home with her Mum Josephine, Father Bernard, her Granddad and her sister Katrina “Treena” and her son Thomas. She loves clothes and has a very weird style that nobody understands but her. She works at a cafe ‘Buttered Bun’ where she makes a great cup of tea, and dates a guy named Patrick. He is a trainer and athlete, who runs every day and competes a lot.
One day at work, she walked a customer out and her boss Frank walked to the door and flipped the sign from open to closed. Louisa was confused, asked Frank why he did that. Frank explained that business wasn’t doing well and how he needed to close down. He gave Lou three months of wages, and she left and walked home full of gloom knowing that her family didn’t have much money and they were gonna question what happened, and worry. She went to the Job Center the next day to meet with Syed. She tried a lot of different jobs and none of them suited her. She was about to give up, and Syed looked at his computer and a job listing for ‘Care assistant position’. Syed said it would be for only six months, and was asking her some questions, and if she would be willing to do this. Lou said “Yes!” she was very excited and was ready to go have her interview the next day. She went home and told her parents she would have an interview at Granta House which is on the other said of the castle at the Traynor’s tomorrow.
Her family was so excited for her, and her mum wanted her to wear a suited skirt that was too tight and her hair pulled up in a bun. She didn’t want to wear it but she did anyway. She walked to the bus stop go on the bus and arrived at the Traynors. When she got there, a nurse that was wearing scrubs was leaving from her interview. Lou got to the doorway and a voice spoke, “Hi you must be Miss Clark.” She said, “Yes, Louisa but you can call me Lou.” The lady said, “All right, do come in, I’m Camilla Traynor” Mrs. Traynor asked Louisa questions and told her she got the job! Louisa was introduced to Will Traynor, a 34-year-old male, who was hit by a motorcycle and now deals with quadriplegia which is complete loss his chest and below including his legs, and that is who she will be caring for. Another male was in the room named Nathan. He is a nurse that does all the physical stuff Will needs.
A few weeks went by and Lou and Will barely spoke, and a few weeks after that Louisa overhears his sister Georgina and his mother talking about how Dignitas, a Swiss clinic that would help Will end his life. Camilla explained to Georgina that he gave his parents six months to live, and Louisa realized that she was basically on suicide watch. So when her workday was done she left and handed in a letter of resignation without an explanation. A few hours after Louisa had been home Camilla arrived at her house and they talked in her car. Camilla begged her to come back and try to change Will’s mind. So Louisa started doing some research and wanted to start going on outings with Will under a budget. She pitched the idea to his parents and she said if they didn’t agree she would quit. So, Will, Nathan, and Louisa went to all different places like a horserace, violin concert, etc. Their last outing was a 10 day trip to Mauritius. One night, he explained to Louisa that he had given his parents six months and that it was time. Louisa cried so hard because Will and her had begun to fall in love. When they got home Louisa got off the plane and left and never looked back because she thought she had changed his mind. Will repacked his bag and they left for Switzerland. Louisa surprisingly went to Switzerland a day or so later.
I would highly recommend this book to really anyone in 8th or 9th grade and above even if it is not an ending people hope for. I think you need to be able to wrap your mind around some of the things in the book. Jojo Moyes used cussing to express the characters feelings. I think the book is on the best sellers list because it is such a tearjerker, and people need to know that not all things end in a happy ending.

This and more reviews at The Book Bar.co

I mentally prepared myself for this book. Other reviews talked about stocking up on tissues and readying yourself for an ugly cry. I really enjoy novels that teeter on romance, but life gets in the way. The reader has to face reality and hopefully apply what they may have learned to their own life. Me Before You (which, this title alone opens all kinds of interpretations) had me from the start. Louisa Clark, Lou, was such an amazing character that blossomed in a steady, beautiful way. She gains confidence and develops a love for herself. Will came off like a beast at first, but as we got to know him and his heart-touching dedication to Lou, it will be difficult to forget this character. I closed this book and examined the 'what-ifs'. I didn't cry, however Me Before You helps build a stronger connection to the people and passions in my life and definitely made me grateful for every day I am given.

You feel sorry for Louisa's family & financial circumstances, although they all make the most of what they have. You know deep down that she's unhappy with her romantic life, but making the most of that as well. Her comfort zone has enveloped her to the point of suffocation, but she accepts it to avoid the uncontrollable unknown. She doesn't feel the need to leave her quaint village or move out of her parents house, even though she has opportunity to do so. Dire financial circumstances have her accepting a job to be Will's caregiver and her steady life is gradually forced to improve and expand. You are sure she's going to turn everything around and everything she's ever wanted will fall into place, only to realize that she can't control everything.

I can't imagine being a quadriplegic and having people wait on me and make sure I don't decay before their eyes. Two years after a devastating accident, Will believes that he's a detriment to the ones that are struggling to keep him alive and he feels that his new life is too much to bear. His family won't come out and say it, but they dwell on how much longer they can go on like this. Lou is forward and funny and it's a complete contrast to Will & his family's routine. Although you feel he doesn't want to get involved, make any attachment to Lou, something changes and it becomes his mission to make Lou realize how much more there is to life. A life that he can no longer partake in, no matter how hard "Clark" tries. He isn't really living his former life through Louisa, but takes satisfaction in knowing that she is opening up to the possibilities.

It becomes such an amazing, heart-warming transformation that these two characters make together and you want the book to finish on this happy note. Superman is allowed to love again with the help of his Heroine (Lois Lane), who needed the confidence to make the first move. But she can't rescue him because in real life, s*** happens, and Will knows this. You will have ups and downs, love and loss, and you have to move on. C'est la vie.

It hurt. It still hurts. And you can listen to both sides of the argument and find very valid points and maybe you sway more to one side than the other, but ultimately you know, you opinion can't be forced onto others. Jojo Moyes helped make this very painful circumstance even more tangible when Louisa's sister, Katrina, equated Lou's pain to losing her own young son. The gutted feeling of when you love something so much and then it's gone, forever. I am sure, like me, (almost) every mom has felt this gripping pain in their chest from this very thought.

There is a moment when you think that there will be twist of hope. Instead the pain, the heart break, is lessened, but still there. It's a beautiful ending and I can't wait until the movie comes out this summer, 2016. Plus, if you're like me and love Louisa Clark's personality, Jojo Moyes wrote a continuation to Lou's new life without Will in, After You After You: A Novel .

Reviewed in Canada on September 20, 2014
Read this because it was a book club selection.
It flowed well which made for a good (quick) read on my daily commute to work.
The story reminds me of Dying Young. You know, that movie with Julia Roberts and Campbell Scott.
I can't say I liked or bonded with any of the characters. Actually, I think there were too many frivolous characters, like Louisa's sister and Will's father.
I predicted the outcome quite early on which was disappointing. The different points of view (from third to first person) from different characters was a bit distracting and not necessary. And I don't understand why the writer didn't have a chapter from Will's point of view. Could have shed more light on what it's like to live a full active life and then end up living in a wheelchair.

When I finished reading the book I was left wondering why it has so many glowing reviews. The word 'overrated' comes to mind.
