What does "true wealth" really mean?

Tina woke up to a chorus of chirping Robins. She glanced at the clock across the room (their bedroom had a no-phone policy) and guessed the time: 5:48 am.

Actually, it was 5:50 am.

Tina hadn’t set an alarm in years, yet her body woke up naturally (and effortlessly) within a range of 4 minutes, give or take.

Her gym clothes were neatly laid out by her bed (the “Cue” from Atomic Habits) and since it was Friday, it meant her fav HIIT workout at Orange Theory. She always went for the instructor Lexie, who had a knack at effortlessly combining Usher, Fleetwood Mack and BTS into one high-energy playlist.

The class was a banger.

Burpees.

Incline sprints.

Tabata mountain climbers.

A Megan Thee Stallion and Rage Against the Machine mash-up was the clincher.

As she walked out to the parking lot, she ran into her friend Connie.

“Crypto Connie,” as they liked to call her.

But first, let’s meet Tina aka $10K Tina.

Tina runs sales at a small design agency. She’s been at the role for nearly a decade. She’s got autonomy, a wonderful team and a 30-hour (fully remote) work week.

$10K Tina had a phase (like $10 Tim and Hundo Hal) where she was obsessed with personal growth hacks and productivity tactics.

And like $1K Juan, she used to feel the daily grind of being under-staffed and having sky-high expectations for herself.

But at 44, she chillaxed a bit. A big part of her newfound zen comes from cultivating a deep practice of self-awareness. She uses questions like:

  • Why do I want what I want?
  • Does this make me come alive?
  • How am I showing up for the people I love?
  • Am I playing the right game?

And her favorite:

What does it mean to have enough?

***

Speaking of enough, what a wild ride it has been for Crypto Connie.

Connie was her bestie from her UC Boulder days.

She had always been a misfit of sorts. She sang in an Electro Pop band.

She was a world class snowboarder.

She had a small cross tattoo below her earlobe (and was an atheist)!

Connie had been an early buyer of the cryptocurrency Solana (her DJ friend told her about it). And she was now worth 8 figures.

With that came an upgrade from a studio apartment to a 4,000 square foot house in the ritzy Cherry Creek suburb of Denver.

”Tina, what up?!” Connie hollered as she they both chugged their canteen-sized Smart Waters.

“Check it out, check it out,” she continued, swiping through the Zillow pictures of her new crib.

It had a meditation room. A wood-burning sauna.

A plunge pool.

“That would be nice,” thought Tina. "Damn, those were some sick amenities."

But given her career trajectory, a $7 million house was not in the cards.

As Crypto Connie pinched the Zillow pictures to zoom, Tina saw 8 notifications come up.

Connie swiped to an app that she’d never seen before.

It had emojis everywhere. Messages where un-threaded. Bot messages galore.

“What is that thing?” asked a shell-shocked Tina.

“Oh that’s just Discord,” Connie replied. “It’s where all the crypto action happens these days. Think CNBC, updated every micro-second.”

“That sounds like hell,” said Tina. She was used to treating Slack like email, only checking it 3x a day.

As she watched these messages race by, all she could see was:

“Oh crap, I gotta jet,” exclaimed Connie as she flipped to yet another app — this time Telegram. I’ve got to make it home in time for this Volta airdrop.

“Kiss kiss,” and she hopped into her Tesla and sped away.

As $10K Tina drove back home, the conversation left her unsettled.

She wasn’t one to compare or keep score. Especially not with the people she loved.

But that plunge pool.

That was some serious #lifegoals sh*t.

But ever since Crypto Connie’s Solana windfall, something about her had changed.

She was always… checking something.

That Discord thing (shudder).

Telegram.

Coinbase prices.

Twitter.

DeFi yields.

The enthusiasm, spontaneity and creativity that was her essence - was gone.

Instead, she was always refreshing something on her phone.

Yes, her bank account had gone up a gazillion times.

Crypto Connie had financial freedom.

But she had lost control of her attention.

Tina's husband had cheekily remarked:

“You’re not rich, if you’re always checking something.”

“A plunge pool. She’s got a friggin’ plunge pool.

Tina couldn’t shake the fact that this rebel - this misfit - now had a plunge pool in her backyard.

As Tina opened her laptop to start her day, she felt her heart rate rising. There was a tightness in her chest.

Was there a deal she could close one quarter early, to spike her commissions?

Should she push her reps a bit harder?

She did some quick mental math.

She had accumulated some Bitcoin.

Maybe they could do a cash-out refi and roll the proceeds into a plunge pool?

But even then, their backyard was on a hill.

Her calendar broke her out of her mini-hysteria.

Every morning, at 9:30 am, she did 30 minutes of Thinking Time.

It was an open-ended brainstorm that examined her job, dreams and passions. Every week, during her Weekly Review (we’ve got a free workshop this Sunday... care to join us?) she picked her $10K Questions for the upcoming week.

The timing of today's question was fortuitous:

What does it mean to have enough?

***

"What does it mean to have enough?"

She opened a blank Notion page, and started typing:

To know what is enough is to truly understand wealth. In all its shapes, dimensions and flavors.

True wealth. Not financial wealth. Not Solana. Not plunge pools.

Of course, financial wealth plays an outsized role. But even that assumption needs to be examined. (After all, we are lucky to have everything that we need - and some.)

What does true wealth mean to me? Our family?

Freedom and flexibility — I have full control of my schedule. I can drop-off and pick-up Owen every day at school. Heck, we’re even going rock climbing today at 1pm. Fri-Yay!

Our family's health — I touch wood as I write this, but our parents are healthy enough to play hide-and-go-seek with Owen. We’ve side-stepped (though it’s coming) the high blood pressure, cholesterol and pre-diabetes that is starting to hit our 40 year old peers. And Matt — bless him, he’s still got a full head of hair. (I know, I'm a bit vain.)

Good work, done well, for the right reasons — Look, I’m not solving the climate crisis. I’m not eradicating Polio. But I care about my work, company and our clients. I show up. I serve others with compassion and get to express myself creatively every day. My activities are in line with my values.

We're living for today — We spend. We smile. We travel. We play. Sure we invest in Owen's 529 Plan and have plans for the future. But we don't let them rob us from the joys we have each and every day. Most of them are simple (good dark chocolate, a day with no Zooms). Some (like our two months working remote from the Big Island during Covid) are more "luxurious." But we're not mortgaging today in the desperate pursuit of an imaginary tomorrow.

Freedom of attention — I NEVER have to check anything. We don’t send emails internally. You can hear a pin drop in our Slack channels. I stopped using YNAB for budgeting years ago (and our net worth continues to go up!). And Discord. If Discord is what it takes to get a plunge pool, I’m out.

We have enough.

As she wrote the last sentence, tears streamed down her face. She was overwhelmed by the clarity of her life. Overwhelmed by how at peace she felt.

👋 Hey everyone, it's Khe popping in to say hi.

Thank you for reading our Tim and Tina series and considering Supercharge Your Productivity.

I gotta admit. That ending made me a bit emotional.

You see, every day I'm part Tim.

Part Hal.

Part Juan.

And part Tina.

I have lots of apps. I love Inbox Zero. I struggle with delegation. And I get envious of crypto-millionaires.

You may be wondering - what does this all have to do with supercharging your productivity?

Everything.

You see, questions about consistency, failure, rejection, envy, identity and self worth are all questions about productivity.

A people pleaser (like myself) always feels rushed because they can't set boundaries.

When I'm scared of rejection, I overcompensate by hiding in analysis-paralysis.

And yes, our course will supercharge you with tactics and systems.

But more importantly, it will also teach you how to zoom out to find your Why.

$10K Work starts with ensuring that you are in alignment. Then you'll watch as all the other quadrants fall into place. Effortlessly.

I hope you'll join us for your $10K Journey.
