Curated List of Thoughtful Baking Sets

collage of graphics of different baking items including baking sheets, parchment paper, spatula, and cookie scoops.

We put together some various items that, together, make a thoughtful and complete set!

    1. Cookie Baking Set โ€“ Start with these baking sheets. Theyโ€™re durable, donโ€™t warp, and cool quickly. Pair with parchment paper sheets or a baking mat, cookie scoops, and a cooling rack for a complete gift. (I love using this lasagna turner as a cookie spatula, too!)
    2. Bread Baking Set โ€“ Gift some fun bread-baking companions like a bread lame, Le Creuset cast iron bread baker, and Flour Water Salt Yeast cookbook, and/or a linen bread bag.
    3. Cake Decorating Set โ€“ Start with the best round cake pans, either these 9-inch cake pans or these 8-inch cake pans. Add a cake turntable (because cake decorating is so much easier with a turntable!), this bench scraper for smoothing icing, this icing comb for textured icing, and/or these icing spatulas.
    4. 12-Piece Piping Tips Set โ€“ This piping tips set includes some of the most common decorating tips (including Wilton 1M) for cakes and cupcakes, plus it includes piping bags. To complete this entire gift, add a mint cake stand and these fun spatulas.
    5. Pie Baking Set โ€“ Start with a quality pie dish (itโ€™s my go-to, favorite one). Complete the gift with a pastry cutter, pie weights, pastry brush, and a pie crust shield.
    6. Baking Pan Set โ€“ Second to baking sheets, a 9ร—13-inch pan is the most common and practical pan to own because itโ€™s useful for sheet cakes, bars, brownies, and more. Add a loaf pan, springform pan, and 9ร—9-inch pan to complete the set.
    7. Cake Decorating Supplies Set โ€“ I donโ€™t own this, but it seems to have everything included! What a wonderful gift for beginner cake decorators.

Sally, Iโ€™ve been baking your recipes to perfection for a decade without fail and lately Iโ€™m going very wrong with the bottoms of my cookies burning. Recipes Iโ€™ve made dozens of times, burnt bottoms! I moved recently and think itโ€™s my oven because I know to follow the instructions to the letter, so I donโ€™t know how to remedy this! I bought new pans, chill everything overnight, I use cookie scoops to measure accurately, I donโ€™t know what else to do but itโ€™s been a nightmare! Any tips or ideas for me to fix this issue? Itโ€™s like my oven just runs really hot or something- Iโ€™ve been trying to cut down 2-3 mins on the bake time which helps but itโ€™s almost like I need to adjust degrees and I have no idea where to start for that. Itโ€™s awful.

Hi Janel! We highly recommend using an in-oven thermometer, so you know the exact temperature of your oven. Theyโ€™re very inexpensive and make a huge difference! Most ovens are not the temperature they say they are, and it sounds like yours is definitely running hot.

What recipes would be best for the fingerprint cookie stamps from Williams Sonoma? Would the lemon thumbprint recipe be too soft to roll out??

Hi Melissa, the best cookies for that would be roll-out/cut-out cookies like these sugar cookies. The lemon thumbprint cookies recipe is too soft, yes.

I am interested in trying to make sourdough bread, creating my own starter. Are there any suggestions you can give regarding the type of canister or crock I should use? And are there any starter recipes that you would recommend? Thank you. I truly enjoy your recipes and willingness to teach the novice homecook how to improve the baked results.

I used King Arthur Bakingโ€™s website for learning about sourdough baking (and a friend gifted me some of his starter.) I use a 32 ounce mason jar for my starter. You donโ€™t need to buy all the stuff at first. You most likely have the basics in your kitchen. Once you learn what you are doing then buy the stuff (if you want to.) It may seem daunting at first, but there is a lot of info on the web. Good luck!

Iโ€™ve never had my USA Pans warp before but they can become discolored and peel coating if theyโ€™re put in the dishwasher. (Hand wash is recommended.) What a fantastic list! As a follower from Canada I am grateful that many of these things can be found on amazon.ca. I am also beyond excited to see you recommending this sprinkle company โ€“ Sweetapolita! They are a Canadian company and their sprinkles are phenomenal. I have a professional baker friend in my life and these are the sprinkles she almost exclusively uses. I also can attest to the fact that I have eaten numerous baked items [more than I am willing to confess to!] From several bakeries [that I donโ€™t know the owners of] who also exclusively use the sprinkles and I can personally attest to the fact that not only are they gorgeous but they also taste good. That can be a hard combination to find! Wishing you a happy Thanksgiving!
