Ned: A Navy Seal. The woman he loves...kidnapped. The stakes couldn't be higher/A Minnesota Marshalls novel (3) (The Minnesota Marshalls) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 923 ratings

After four years of training to become a Navy SEAL, Ned Marshall is finally ready to marry the woman of his dreams, Shae Johnson. And Shae’s been uber patient, waiting, building a life as a free-lance graphic artist, moving around the globe to be with him. So, when she said yes to his proposal in Geneva, he fully expected to live happily-ever-after.

At the very least, he expected her to be waiting at the hotel for him three days after an emergency call-out. And maybe it was unreasonable to expect her to be sitting in the hotel, working on her watercolors—Shae, after all grew up in Montana, and she has adventure in her blood. So of course she’s going to go climb the beautiful Swiss mountains. Even make a friend.

But Ned isn’t thrilled with her new friend, and something about him doesn’t feel safe…

So she’s made some friends while waiting for Ned to return? Shae can’t believe that after years of sacrifice, Ned is actually angry at her—what did he expect, that she’d sit by the window? Dana and his friends are harmless, right?

Not so much. Because when Shae finds herself kidnapped, and brought to Russia, she fears the worst—she’s been swept up in a human trafficking ring. And when she’s sent to, of all places, Siberia how will Ned ever find her?

But Ned isn’t going to lose her—not after everything they’ve been through, and he’ll stop at nothing to rescue her. But when he discovers the real reason she’s been taken, he will have to become a traitor to his country if he wants her back.

Join the epic race to rescue Shae in the high-adrenaline book three in the Minnesota Marshalls series.

Quite the romantic suspense!

Quite the romantic suspense!
An intense story from start to finish, Ned by Susan May Warren kept me flipping pages as Ned desperately searched for his fiancé, Shae, while Shae tried to stay alive after being kidnapped. I struggled to like Ned for a substantial portion of the novel as Ned was obsessed and angry from the start (rightfully so considering the circumstances). However, the plot twists and suspense held my attention throughout the book. Could anyone possibly survive everything that Ned did? I am not sure, but between the romantic suspense and the spiritual themes, I enjoyed reading Ned.Every so often in Ned, Susan May Warren dropped fabulous quotes filled with spiritual insights. The statements felt natural with the flow of the story. Some were so impactful, I had to stop reading and take a minute to let them sink in. While the characters may have learned these truths a bit too easily (character development was limited), the spiritual insights were my favorite aspect of Ned.Ned lands as book three in The Minnesota Marshalls series. It is essential to read these stories in order as Fraser, the protagonist of book one, played a supportive, but substantial role in this book. Ned also included characters from novels prior to this series (some I had read, some I had not) and trying to keep everyone’s story straight felt overwhelming. Ned is not my favorite book in this series, but I enjoyed it and I am anticipating book four, Iris. 3.5 Stars for Ned by Susan May Warren.Disclosure of Material Connection: I was provided a copy of this book by the author or publisher. There's a point within Ned that someone asks if the Marshalls can go anywhere or do anything without getting into trouble (paraphrase). Before the character even answered, I said out loud, "No." And it's true, in the best sense. In fact, Ned may be the best book in this series yet, if not the best in the entire twelve-book Marshalls saga, Montana and Minnesota. As a devoted Susan May Warren fan, I don't say that lightly.

I actually expected to like Ned's story the least, because it reminded me of Pete and Jess from the Search and Rescue series, whose love story/love triangle got kind of dragged out over several novels. However, Ned and Shae are not only a completely different couple with a completely different dynamic, but have a story that in my opinion is much easier to root for and relate to.

Granted, no. Most of us will never find ourselves on Russian prison ships (we hope) or trying to smuggle nuclear waste to the absolute wrong people to save lives (again, we hope). But I can personally attest to the fact, we will find ourselves in situations where what we thought we knew or needed takes a total 180-degree turn. We will find ourselves watching God show up in ways we thought He never would, even and especially if we've known Him for a long time. And really, for me at least, that's the best way to watch Him work. I'm always chagrined when He surprises me like that because I feel like, "Yeah, should've had a lot more faith." But I'm also always awed and reminded of how powerful and yet caring God is.

God certainly has plenty to work with here, through both the action and the characters. I don't think I've ever seen Susie May meld these two elements together so seamlessly in one of her action-driven novels. That is, in a Marshalls novel, I'm usually waiting for the "chasing/defeating bad guys" parts to slow down so I can get to know the heroes and what they're going through spiritually and emotionally. Here, I never got that. Instead, I was invested equally in the action and introspection at all times. I cared about how Shae, Ned, Iris, and Hudson were going to grow, but I desperately needed to see how exactly they were going to say, get off that floating gulag or keep Ned from spending the rest of his years in Leavenworth or save Shae from trafficking. I raced to finish at least one crucial action scene (on a fairly uncomfortable couch in a camper, while waiting for the effects of melatonin, so brownie points to Susie May for that alone).

I also loved the interplay between these characters, both as individuals with non-love interests and as couples. For instance, Iris and Hudson have some great banter throughout their scenes, especially when she's trying to keep him from absconding from his hospital room. I didn't crack up, but the little smirks and giggles I did get were much-needed. Shae and Ned also have some wonderful moments as they pick up where they left off and deal with both their needs to prove themselves and feel independent (ouch, Susie, get off my toe)! And I loved the presence of both Vikka and Judah especially. I have a high index of suspicion about Judah in particular, but won't spoil it. Let's just say, whether I'm right or not, that guy fulfilled his service with some major flying colors and deserves highest honors. His message of "You are never alone" comforted me as much as it did Shae--and I was the one safe and warm at home.

Finally, I want to commend Susie May for her action scenes here, just because I rarely if ever do so. I've never seen them "pop" quite so much from her, maybe because as I said, they're so well-balanced with the character development. Keep your eyes peeled for:
-Any interaction between Judah and Shae, but particularly Shae's uncovering of Judah's secret
-Shae's first escape attempt and the surprise after the cliffhanger
-The surprise twist on the bridge in Prague, which includes an interesting cameo
-Iris nursing Hudson, including the aforementioned banter. It happens after some understated action I can't spoil but lends some insight into his character I think will come in handy later
-That final call for Ned, and his decision (ah! Unexpected floaty hearts)!

Again, this might be the best Marshalls book yet, and it has me looking forward to Iris in a big way. If you haven't read this yet, grab a copy. And if you don't yet know the Marshalls at all, dive in, starting with Knox of the Montana Marshalls. Just be warned--set aside big chunks of time because you won't want to stop, don't drink too much caffeine, and maybe keep some melatonin supplements handy. This family may be hazardous to your sleep, in the best way possible.

This book may have been better if I had read the first in the series first. I had a hard time keeping up with the characters. The story was good and kept my attention, but while Ned's story is done, Iris is left out there who knows where. I did like the Christian background without it being preachy. I liked the personalities of the characters.

I am really enjoying this Minnesota Marshalls series! I was a little nervous about this one, as I knew that Shae was going to end up in a Russian Gulag and I just didn’t know how I would handle that. But this story was amazing and is now my favorite of the series (so far). Shae and Ned’s story was introduced in the previous book, Jonas, and this is definitely a series that you need to read in order.

I liked that the author also introduced Iris and Hudson’s story in this book. They had quite the storyline developing for themselves, as well, and I am excited to be diving into that one soon.

I loved that even though Ned and Shae had fought before she was kidnapped, they both knew that they loved each other and were genuinely devoted to one another. I really liked the “Gotcha” phrase that became a bit of a running quip between the two during the novel. Those were sweet moments for them. The romantic chemistry between Ned and Shae was great and it was fun to see Iris and Hudson spending time together, too, albeit not in a romantic way at the moment. This was a great story from start to finish.

Wow! This book is really full of action and adventure! Just when they think they're safe, something else happens to put them in danger again! If you are looking for a book that is realistic, this isn't it. There is just too much danger and adventure without a break. But if you don't mind that, you might like this book. I did!

One of the things I love in Warren's books are the conversations the characters have encouraging each other in faith.

There is a great balance between action, mystery and romance in this story, as there has been through the entire series so far.

Looking forward to the next one.

Hi paced action from the start. Loved the story line and am thoroughly enjoying the cross over between all the books in the series. Does make it a bit tricky to be 100% clear on a few minor aspects of the backstory if you’ve missed any prior series, but doesn’t take away from the main storyline. Loved the introduction of Iris and Hudson into the plot and am already counting the days until I can get my hands on “Iris”!!!

Ned is a Navy Seal who has fallen for Shae, a woman with a tough childhood. Shae has been kidnapped by a Russian criminal organization. Ned is working to rescue her, while she is doing her best to stay alive. The 23rd Psalm comes into this story a fair bit, as both of them need to let go and let God. It's a page turner with lots of heart.

I hadn’t read no’s one or two books, obviously the stories continue on with each new book and some new characters.
The storyline was ok, but left a lot of unanswered questions, with no real ending.
The proof reading or editing was awful, this book could have been tightened up a lot. Not to mention the spelling mistakes.
For me, it was a freebie, I won’t be buying any books in this series because of the very sloppy way the book is presented.
