My Thoughts and More on Mabel and the Little Green Men by Susan Kimmel Wright

About the Book

Book: Mabel and the Little Green Men

Author: Susan Kimmel Wright

Genre: Cozy Mystery

Release date: October 5, 2023

The last thing Mabel needed was a flying saucer, not to mention a rash of similar sightings all over town. Her life’s already been upended by getting fired and moving to Grandma’s old house in Medicine Spring. So far, the deceptively sleepy village has delivered several murders—and romance with a handsome private investigator. Are little green men next?

While Mabel tries to get to the bottom of the apparent space invasion, she also gets herself caught between competing candidates for township supervisor. Small-town politics call for more diplomacy than she has—not to mention the ability to duck, run, and hide.

And unfortunately, her UFO investigation only raises more questions. Long-buried secrets surface, all tied to one night in 1958 and another seeming alien attack. But something more troublesome than any Martian invasion is on its way. A film crew descends, bent on producing a documentary on the historic UFO crash. Hordes of tourists follow, all infected with flying saucer fever. When an all-too-human body turns up at the alleged alien gravesite in a local cemetery, Mabel realizes murder is bound to follow her, whether of this world or not.

My Thoughts:

Mabel's life is anything but ordinary. She's just trying to fix up her grandmother's old house so she and her pets won't freeze to death and write her book. However, none of that is getting done much. Now that she has been caught up in an UFO sighting, that has really shook her up.

I enjoyed going on the hunt with Mabel, her boyfriend John, and best friend Lisa as they try to get to the bottom of the UFO sighting. They also find out that this is not the first sighting in the town's history and as Mabel digs deeper, she realizes that some of the townspeople have been keeping and hiding some pretty old secrets. With a television crew on the way to reopen the UFO mystery, and Mabel getting in the middle of unwanted political sides, her book writing and house weatherizing will be taking a back seat.

This was an interesting mystery in the town of Medicine Spring as Mabel continues in her new adventures.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

About the Author

Susan Kimmel Wright began her life of mystery as a child, with reading. That led to writing kids’ mysteries and eventually to Medicine Spring with Mabel. A longtime member of Mystery Writers of America and Sisters in Crime, Susan’s also a prolific writer of personal experience stories, many for Chicken Soup for the Soul. She shares an 1875 farmhouse in southwestern PA with her husband, several dogs and cats, and an allegedly excessive stockpile of coffee and tea mugs.

More from Susan

It’s a Bird! It’s a Plane! It’s a…UFO?

Have you ever looked up at the night sky and seen something you couldn’t explain? What did you—or would you—do? Call a friend? The police department? Post a picture on social media? Or maybe you’d keep it quiet, trying to convince yourself it was a figment of your imagination.

In Mabel & the Little Green Men, I had so much fun giving Mabel a UFO encounter and then seeing where it led her, while more sightings and the arrival of a TV documentary crew turned the small town of Medicine Spring topsy-turvy. Wacky characters and situations kept surprising me too!

My best friend has had UFO encounters—twice. Once, while sitting at her desk studying, she looked out to see a strange light hovering beyond her window. Another time, she spotted a large object in the sky ahead of her while driving home alone from a movie. Alas, though I’ve scanned the skies for years, this has never happened to me!

My friend is far from the only sane person to report seeing a UFO. Every year, hundreds of sightings are reported in the US, including many from police, ministers, military pilots, and others not known for fabrication or flights of fantasy. The term UFO (unidentified flying object), as well as the now-preferred term UAP (unidentified aerial phenomenon), both simply refer to an airborne object that can’t be readily identified. Neither term has anything whatsoever to do with flying saucers or “little green men.”

Most UFOs are eventually explained—some as atmospheric events, deflated balloons, or experimental aircraft. But the mystery fascinates me—especially for the handful that have never been satisfactorily explained.

While I’ve never personally seen a UFO, many people in my area reported the 1965 crash of the Kecksburg “space acorn,” an event now celebrated with an annual festival benefiting the fire department. Do you have a UFO story in your town?

My Thoughts and More on Love Overboard by Shannon Sue

About the Book

Book: Love Overboard: A Novel

Author: Shannon Sue Dunlap

Genre:Christian Romcom

Release date: May 21, 2024

When four quirky friends retire on a never-ending round of cruises, their attire consists of more than floral shirts and gaudy skirts. Armed with walkie-talkies and battle plans, these relationship experts—who’ve dubbed themselves the “Shippers”—target hostess Lacey Anderson and director Jonathan King in their romantic schemes. However, the young couple is determined not to play along, having previously sailed the tumultuous seas of love only to witness their relationship crash and burn.

Boss matchmaker Emily Windsor has orchestrated multiple romantic successes, and these two upstarts certainly won’t get the best of her. The chemistry between Lacey and Jonathan is obvious, but the couple rebuffs every outlandish plot and “coincidental” meeting, forcing the Shippers to chart a new course to true love—all while inadvertently thwarting drug smugglers threatening to ruin their floating home.

Can they untangle the mess of romance and intrigue before it’s too late, or will their journey end in heartbreak and disaster? Shannon Sue Dunlap’s enthralling new series unfolds a tale where love, laughter, and danger converge in an entertaining maritime adventure.

My Thoughts:

This was such a fun and unique adventure as we meet four elderly women who live on a cruise ship most of the time. That is an interesting retirement situation, but it works for them, and kind of sounds like fun. Not only that but they have earned the nickname the Shippers, as they focus primarily on making matches for love worn people.

Well, Lacey wants no part of their scheming on her love life. She is just fine, even if she just wants to stay alone for her life. That is until she literally runs into the one man that could have given her her fairy tale life. If only she hadn't run away from him. Now both she and Jon are working on the same cruise ship, often finding themselves together thanks to the Shippers.

Jon has never gotten over Lacey, and while he would still like their relationship to resume, he does need closure on why and how she left him the last time. Not only that but he has been tasked by his family to look into some criminal activity aboard the cruise ships. And the Shippers are not making his life easy either.

With laugh out loud moments, especially the scenarios these energetic, funny, and mischievous women cook up, this cruise ship will have a lot more excitement than normal. Brace yourself for many fun times and almost kisses with a mystery and possible murder thrown in. I have never been on a cruise ship before, but the author's deftly told tale had me feeling all the fun on the waves.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

About the Author

Shannon Sue Dunlap lives in hot and humid Houston, Texas where she writes love stories with a laugh-out-loud center. She enjoys traveling around the world, singing tunes from classic musicals, and drinking Dr. Pepper. Shannon is a die-hard fan of happy endings and believes God has designed one for each of us.

More from Shannon

My attention zeroed in on the tv screen where a darling elderly woman happily danced with a man in a captain’s uniform. The feature report told how she’d forsaken the nursing home and chosen to live her retirement on a cruise ship instead. Afterward, the wheels in my brain started to churn. What if there wasn’t just one woman, but a whole group? And what if they amused themselves by matchmaking the young people around them? Thus, the idea for Love Overboard started to form.

I related to my wandering heroines. Traveling is “in my blood.” I was three months old when my parents hit the road. (Or so they tell me. I really don’t remember.) It was the 70s and Dad was a traveling preacher called an evangelist. He and mom started out with their newborn baby in a Toronado Oldsmobile. And even after we made a permanent home in Virginia, they kept traveling.

No wonder my feet itch.

In those many journeys, of course there were books. Daydreams of detectives and western heroes and ladies in fancy dresses kept me company in the backseat. I’d finish the stack of novels I brought with me, and my parents would stop at whatever town we were near and look up a Christian bookstore to restock my supply.

Now, it tickles my fancy to think my stories might be keeping someone else company in their plane seat or deck chair. As I write, of course, I keep traveling. I’ve taught school in Botswana, driven on the left side of a rain-slicked Scottish road, twirled in front of Mr. Darcy’s Pemberly (the Colin Firth version), visited Prince Edward Island for the 100th anniversary of Anne of Green Gables, and been serenaded by an opera singer on a European river cruise. (I don’t mean in the audience. He took me from my seat, wrapped his arms around me, and let the crescendos fly.) Learning about the history of places and trying crazy new dishes makes life more interesting. The most unique thing I remember eating is Mopani worm in Zambia. (It tasted like crunchy dirt.)

As Love Overboard releases, I’d like to give a big shoutout to that daring little old lady that lent me inspiration. Perhaps I’ll follow her example when I reach my 80s. No matter how long is ordained for my time on this planet, I hope books and traveling will always play a part in my story.

My Thoughts and More on Shoot at the Sunset by Kathleen Denly

About the Book

Book: Shoot at the Sunset

Author: Kathleen Denly

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Release Date: April 9, 2024

Will love survive when truth takes aim at their secrets?

Sharpshooter Preston Baker has spent a lifetime confronting danger head-on. So when a heartfelt letter arrives from his big sister asking for help, he doesn’t hesitate to put his traveling show career on hold and journey to her remote desert ranch, determined to make amends for past failures. What he doesn’t expect is to discover his long-lost little sister and her best friend, Lucy, are both hard at work on the ranch.

Unbeknownst to anyone, Lucy Arlidge’s decision to travel to a remote desert ranch was born as much from desperation as friendship. Fleeing San Francisco may have saved Lucy’s life, but the decision left others in danger. To thwart the evil plans of those who pursue her and her family, Lucy must keep her new gem-mining operation concealed and her secrets safe.

Preston is drawn to the mysterious woman, despite her plans to marry the neighboring rancher. Lucy’s quiet strength and undeniable beauty beckon him like a campfire in the wilderness, offering light amidst the dark memories and deepest fears resurrected by the presence of his sisters. But as danger closes in, Preston and Lucy must confront their pasts to save not only their own futures, but the lives of everyone they love.

Click here to get your copy!

My Thoughts:

There are a lot of secrets to uncover in this story and a lot of family drama to sift through and heal from. Especially for Preston Baker, who has come back to help his sisters after a devastating bandit attack on their ranch. Lucy Arlidge has also come to the ranch with her best friend to help out, but she also went to get away from the danger that stalks her in San Francisco when she overheard something she shouldn't have.

Both Lucy and Preston are drawn together, but she has already begun courting the neighbor rancher. Even though all she feels for him is friendship, he seems the safe and sure bet that she needs for a stable life. She does grapple with telling him her family's secrets, though, and that she is in big trouble.

There is a lot of action on the pages of this book. Like I said, it seems everyone is hiding something. We also get glimpses of Lucy and Preston's family life and they are more similar than they could know. Preston had an interesting job as a sharpshooter with a traveling show before he came to help his sister, these skills will prove most helpful to him and those he cares about as danger starts coming to the ranch.

This ranch is very important, and it also serves for a very important mission. Women who have been abused by men have been sent to help out, as Ginny, Preston's sister doesn't trust men. These women are given a second chance at life away from those who have harmed and abused them.

Combining romance, danger, and second chances, this cast of characters, a family in many ways than just blood, must somehow stand together finding the truth and protecting each other from the attacks that are heading their way. This is a story that will sweep you up in California of 1873 and keep you turning the pages as they grapple with many tough situations and sensitive subjects and must still remain strong and true.

My Thoughts and More on Scandals and Mercies by Kathleen Rouser

About the Book

Book: Scandals and Mercies

Author: Kathleen Rouser

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Release Date: April 23, 2024

He’s a reporter determined to uncover the truth, but the secrets he finds could crush her family—and their second chance at love.

Taken from her family’s farm to be raised by her wealthy aunt and uncle, Nora Armstrong has accepted that not only will she never realize her dream of becoming a teacher, she’d also rather be a spinster than submit to her cruel aunt’s society selection of a suitable husband. The one man who caught her eye betrayed her best friend. And she’s got enough on her hands, hiding her sister’s shameful secret from her aunt.

When the local home for unwed mothers burns down, the arson investigation brings big-city reporter James Cooper back to Stone Creek—and back into Nora’s life. James also has a meddling aunt who raises more questions than she answers about his past. Not to mention, he can’t figure out why Nora constantly rebuffs him. When his reporting casts aspersions on the local church and lays the blame for the fire and a series of robberies at the wrong feet, he risks losing his new position at the paper.

As they seek to unravel the town’s mystery, rescue endangered mothers and children, and navigate their own family secrets forced to light, James and Nora increasingly turn to each other for help. But can they overcome James’s lack of faith and the disapproval of Nora’s guardians to find a second chance at love?

Click here to get your copy!

My Thoughts:

Nora Armstrong is doing her best to be the best niece she can to her aunt and uncle who have generously taken her in and given her a lady's education and such, to help her parents and family out. But living with her Aunt Gertrude, an embittered woman who heaps abuse on her is slowly wearing Nora down. She dreams of escape if only she could move on and be a teacher like she has always wanted. She cannot return home and be another burden to her parents, especially now since her sister has found herself in the family way with no husband.

Reporter James Cooper has been enamored with Nora for quite a while. But she has something against him, and he does not know why. Then tragedy strikes the town and burns down the home for unwed mothers, and James is investigating to see if arson is the culprit. Could Nora's embittered aunt and her cronies have anything to do with it? And then James's own world is rocked out from under him.

The title says it all for this story. There was plenty of family secrets and hidden scandals around this little town and more. How would these characters handle it? James needs to turn to a higher power and Nora needs to not turn into an embittered woman like her aunt. Can these two find their way through the rough terrain they find themselves in? This story held great lessons on forgiveness, real forgiveness and letting go of the bitterness that so easily takes root in one's life.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

Writing Scandals and Mercies: A Personal Spiritual Journey

By Kathleen Rouser

Scandals and Mercies has been my hardest story to write thus far. It seems that as I work through issues in my life it may come out in my characters. And I can relate to Nora Armstrong, my heroine. I can understand some of her struggles, her tender heart toward the Coping children, and figuring out who she is in Jesus. The challenges I had in writing this book are reflected in the theme which came through as I wrote it—identity in Christ. Then I became more purposeful in exploring the theme. Nora felt alone and had doubts at the beginning, but then she learned what it meant for her to trust in God despite her difficulties.

Though I’d been a believer for nearly forty years when I began writing Scandals and Mercies, I was—and still am—going through some difficult trials that forced me to really think about what my identity in Christ is. Who am I in Him? Will I depend on Jesus through one of the worst trials of my life? Or will I become bitter? I think of when Jesus said some hard things and many of His disciples deserted Him. He said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?” And Peter said, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

Jesus is truly the only One who has the answers, the words of eternal life. Where else would I turn? And when He doesn’t directly answer, especially the way I want, it’s for me to trust in Him.

And it’s also about sharing in the fellowship of His sufferings, not that we can add anything to our salvation, but that trials and suffering are a part of the Christian life, meant to mold us and grow us in our faith. And if we allow it, to be changed more closely into the someone who projects the image of Christ to others. My husband likes to say we are “Jesus with skin on” for each other.

Working through all of that while writing how Nora grew in her faith took a lot of emotional energy, but God strengthened me and I finished her story, while He is still writing mine!

My Thoughts on Her Son's Faithful Companion by Jill Weaherholt

About:

Her son needs love and friendship

Now she’s found the answer to their prayers…

Former barrel racer Caitlyn Calloway wants her son with epilepsy to have everything—even if it means selling her family home. Problem is, the place is in disrepair. Her former crush, service dog trainer Logan Beckett, offers to help. But letting Logan and his dogs into their lives makes the past almost impossible to leave behind…especially when it opens the door to love.

From Love Inspired: Uplifting stories of faith, forgiveness and hope.

My Thoughts:

Caitlyn, list maker extraordinaire, has a whole host of problems she is dealing with. Most of them financial. Her seven-year-old adopted son, Henry, has been diagnosed with epilepsy and their medical bills are piling up real fast. Caitlyn has gone back to where she grew up, now that she has inherited her childhood home. Could this be the answer she is seeking for her finances? Hardly, as the home needs a lot of repairs before she can place it on the market.

I liked Caitlyn. She had grit and was bound and determined to make a good life for her and her son, the best she could. However, she had a hard time accepting the help that others wanted to give. As Logan, a long-ago friend, has come to realize. He wants to help Caitlyn and Henry as much as he can. He just has to go about it carefully as to not seem like he is interfering. I found this a good lesson on accepting others help, letting them bless us blesses them.

This was a nice coming home novel and finding new love and a new life when least expected.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

My Thoughts and More on Loyally, Luke by Pepper Basham

Loyally, Luke JustRead Takeover Tour

Welcome to the Takeover + Review Blitz for Loyally, Luke by Pepper Basham hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About the Book

Loyally Luke Title: Loyally, Luke
Series: Skymar #3
Author: Pepper Basham
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Release Date: May 14, 2024
Genre: Contemporary Christian Romance

Sometimes love means embracing the good, the bad. . . and even the impossible.

Dear Reader -- My name is Luke Edgewood, and there are few things in life that I require. Mainly black coffee. And flannel. And lots of solitude. And my dogs, Chewy and Indie. What I don't need is romance, so I have no plans to change my thirty-year-old bachelor status anytime soon.

But my youngest sister thinks that by accepting a short-term construction job in the small European country of Skymar, that I'm going to follow along in her footsteps and discover my own romantic adventure. Nope. Bah humbug. The End. This time, her rom-com-movie senses are totally wrong.

Or maybe not. Because I've met a Grace Kelly lookalike who is annoying. . . until she isn't. But she is impossible. As in, nothing can happen between us because she is a literal princess. Even though that's easy to forget when we're working together to restore a castle-like orphanage in a secluded mountain town and "forced proximity" includes a small closet, a secret one-hundred-year-old journal, and the tactile memory of an off-limits royal in my arms.

Basically, the whole situation has turned into an ooey gooey magical snow globe of romantic tropes complete with cute kids and an actual ball. Now, even my sentences are starting to sound like mush. Ugh. Send high levels of testosterone my way--I'm going to need it.
