In Part 1, we'll meet 3 Matchlighters scholars from 2021 who successfully navigated the application process. Together we’ll discuss, among other things:
- What 3 things helped you be successful as you navigated the college admissions process this year?
- What did you write your personal statement on and why?
- What do you feel was key in helping your application stand out?
- What would you have done differently (i.e., what advice would you give to rising seniors)?
- What did you learn about yourself through this process?
In Part 2, we'll meet Edward Fiske, author of the Fiske Guide to Colleges, a book that is almost certainly in your college counselor’s office. During this conversation, we’ll cover:
- What are some of the biggest mistakes students and parents make when searching for a school?
- A Brief History of the Fiske Guide: How and why did it start?
- How was the 2021 guide created—in the middle of a pandemic, no less?
- Why did Ted decide to drop tests from the Fiske Guide this year?
- How are the Fiske Guide ratings different from those in US News and World Report?
- How do students begin to determine which schools are their favorites?
In Part 3, join Deanna Dixon (Dean of Admission, Smith College), Rick Clark (Director of Admission, Georgia Tech), and Gigi McGuire (Asst. Dir. of Partnerships & Initiatives, Cal-State Northridge) for a panel discussion, where I’ll ask them a wide range of questions, including:
- What surprised you (as an admission officer) this year?
- Should students test, or does it really not matter? For which students does it matter?
- How has the pandemic impacted issues of access and equity?
- How can counselors and teachers better advocate for students in their teacher recommendation letters?
- 3 things students can do to set themselves up for a great application process
- Your questions! Have a question? Feel free to submit your questions here and I’ll select a few to ask our panel.
