One Last Chance (Alaska Air One Rescue Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 1,149 ratings

The voice on the radio saved his life.
But when he discovers who she is…it just might cost him everything.

Axel Mulligan was built to be a Coast Guard rescue swimmer. He could swim faster, endure longer and became a miracle for those in peril in the sea. Until a tragedy destroyed him and sent him home, to Alaska.

Now, three years later, he’s not going to let the past repeat itself, so as an Air One rescue swimmer, he’ll do anything to save lives. Including lose his own---which is what he expects when he goes into the icy waters of the Bering Sea, trying to rescue a cruise group of tourists. But for the voice on the other end of the Ham radio, he might have given up, let hypothermia win.

But it didn’t. Now he’ll do anything to find the voice and thank her.

Except the voice—
Flynn Turnquist—is not who he thinks. A national wildlife researcher, she’s deep in the bush, tracking wolf pack patterns. Or is she? In fact, she’s a former cop, tracking down a serial killer. And she’s close enough to see his handiwork in the trail of bodies. She nearly had him—until he escaped into the Bering Sea. But she just knows he’s still alive…and she’s sure she’s on his trail…

When Axel finds Flynn…and what she’s really up to, it stirs up a terrible nightmare he’s been dodging for years—the kidnapping and death of his own cousin. Worse, he’s led the killer right to her doorstep. Now, it’s a race through Alaska to stay alive… and when tragedy strikes again, he must choose between rescue or redemption…

An exhilarating adventure through the Alaskan Wilderness!

Axel Mulligan was built to be a Coast Guard rescue swimmer. He swam fast and endured long, a miracle for those in peril--until a tragedy sent him home to Alaska. Now, three years later, he's not going to let the past repeat itself. As an Air One rescue swimmer, he'll do anything to save lives--including sacrifice his own.

He expects to do just that while trying to rescue a group of tourists from the icy waters of the Gulf of Alaska. If not for the voice on the other end of the ham radio, he might have given up and let hypothermia win. That voice awakened something in his heart, and he sets out to find the woman it belongs to.

Flynn Turnquist is not who Axel thinks she is. A national wildlife researcher, she's deep in the bush, tracking wolf pack patterns. Or is she? In fact, she's a former cop, tracking down a serial killer. She nearly had him--until he escaped into the wilds of the Alaskan bush.

When Axel finds Flynn and discovers what she's really up to, it stirs up a terrible nightmare he's been dodging for years--the kidnapping and death of his own cousin. Worse, he's led the killer right to Flynn's doorstep. Now, it's a race through Alaska to stay alive. And when tragedy strikes again, he must choose between rescue or redemption.

An exhilarating adventure through the Alaskan wilderness!

Although I attended the U of Minnesota, I’m a woodsy girl at heart. Or maybe I’m an adventurer—having lived and traveled all over the world, including Siberia, Russia as a missionary for eight years. Thrilling Contemporary Romance!
"This was not how he wanted to die. Thank you. Buried alive at the bottom of the ocean, the air slowly turning to poison in the tomb-slash-cabin of the fishing boat. Lady Luck." And then . . . . . that voice came over his radio again. He'd never met her, but she was effectively throwing him a life line by distracting him from the fact that he might be going down with the ship; quite literally. His nine lives, and all that. Talk about a chance meeting.. . . . Alaska Air One rescue swimmer Axel Mulligan crossing paths with detective Flynn Turnquist from Minnesota . . . . or would they always remain "Jack and Rose"? (cue up music from "The Titanic") "I fell down a mountain. . . . After someone shot at me." His little sparrow, in the flesh . . . wait, had she just pointed a gun at him? . . . . for just a minute, before collapsing at his feet. It seems they were playing a game of turn-about-is-fair-play, because now it was Axel coming to Flynn's rescue. Long story short, Flynn had returned to Alaska to find her missing twin while endeavoring to solve a series of murders committed by the Midnight Sun Killer, and just like that! . . . she had a partner. The amount of adrenaline necessary to rescue everyone in this story is massive, but oh, so satisfying. Admittedly, I got a little lost in the case details (that's why I read books like this more than once!!!), but the characters and their electrifying chemistry?? Nothing short of outstanding. Filled with inspirational truths; "He is not a God of chaos but peace. And when we trust him, we can know that he will be with us, here in the valley or up on the mountain or even in the depths of the sea", it should be obvious by now why I am thrilled that this series is not even close to being finished yet.

Romance, sweet, Christian, mystery, suspense; series but stand alone read.
Flynn and Axel’s story started out as a rescue gone bad, and Axel cut off from lifesaving communications while trapped in a sinking boat. Mesmerized by the voice that helped save his life he seeks her out.
Multiple rescues for them both, mysteries and serial killers on their radars, and coming to grips with how two people who live thousands of miles apart can make a go of it.
Great characters, strong side characters, glimpses of other characters from other series, and perfect setting in Alaska with the SAR team made for an intense, real, fantastic read. Can’t wait to read other books in this series. The perfect escape, with a dash of faith and romance.

“There are things you can’t change and things you can’t, and knowing the difference is the key to a happy life.”

Oh my goodness. I don’t think I breathed the entire time I was reading One Last Chance by Susan May Warren. When it wasn’t because of the suspense thread (serial killers!) or the adventure thread (some really close call rescues!), it was because of the intense chemistry and smokin’ hot kisses between Axel and Flynn. Whew!!! I’m still fanning over here – and that definitely is NOT a complaint.

Axel and Flynn are such great characters with engaging personalities and emotional backstories. And these two are so gone over each other so quickly… but the insta-attraction-must-kiss-you-may-be-falling-in-love-with-you-already absolutely makes sense with them because of the emotionally-intense initial contact and first in-person encounter they have. That kind of ‘meet cute’ would certainly spawn some immediately-deep feelings. But of course Susan May Warren doesn’t leave them in that deep end with only physical attraction and sizzling kisses to steer their relationship-kayak. No, she puts them in one situation after another that force them to peel back some long-buried layers and in the process shape those passionate feelings for each other into something that will stand the test of time.

“But with God there are no what-ifs. There is only truth. And the truth is that you’re not in charge, God is, and no matter what happens, he is good.”

The suspense and adventure elements in One Last Chance had me on the edge of my seat, glued to the page, completely immersed in the fights for survival as well as the serial killer investigations and what happened to Flynn’s twin sister. All of which are very personal for our protagonists, kicking that tension up even further as I grew to really love Axel and Flynn so it became personal for me too. Warren captures the wild elements of Alaska so tangibly, the harshness and the beauty – and the parts that are a combination of two. I could feel the icy spray of water and the sharp rocks, the powerful wind and the wet snow… not to mention the chilling fear as the killer gets closer, the danger gets more terrifying, and the outcome gets less certain. Throw in some stunning twists and … yeah… I couldn’t have put this book down if I’d wanted to. Which I didn’t.

Bottom Line: In One Last Chance, Susan May Warren takes readers on a bumpy and completely compelling ride full of danger, mystery, surprise turns, romance, family, friendship, and faith. Let’s just say she keeps the local hospital hopping with daring rescues, close calls, and the fact that our hero & heroine are stuck in a killer’s crosshairs. Make sure you, dear reader, are also taking appropriate precautions in case you don’t remember to breathe from the pulse-pounding suspense or you find yourself in a swoon from the wowza kisses. This book really should come with a hazard warning for all of the above reasons but what a way to go! I loved book one but wow … One Last Chance just became my favorite. So far. Because I have a feeling that Moose and London’s respective stories are going to have my full attention as well.

“There are things you can change and things you can’t, and knowing the difference is the key to a happy life.”

Allow Susan May Warren to whisk you away to the town of Copper Mountain in Alaska where you’ll join Axel Mulligan and Flynn Turnquist and discover for yourself the danger in continuously reaching for happy moments when you should be reaching for joy.

I loved my time with the hunky Air One rescue swimmer and the former cop now a national wildlife researcher in the Alaskan bush where they were forced to decide between rescue or redemption. Warren paints her characters' vivid backstories with such detail and emotion that you’ll feel like you know them. She then plops them in carefully crafted situations where they need to face some difficult truths and prioritize things before they can move on. Her ability to write slowly simmering attraction, combine it with hair-raising adventure and a fight for survival story is phenomenal. This is my fifth book by this author - I love her romantic suspense stories set in Alaska.

This redemption story highlights Proverbs 3: 5-6 about trusting God and Matt 10:29-31about the sparrow. I enjoyed this story; it had me considering all the ways that light overcomes the darkness.

Another cracker jack novel. I have been reading Susan May Warren's books since some of her first books came out and I never get tired if the stories she weaves, the characters who are flawed but still find faith in Jesus is the only way that they can do life well. Am really enjoying this series and am looking forward to Moose and Tillie's story. And maybe one day I'll get the chance to visit Alaska.
