Tyre Nichols died from "extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating," according to an independent autopsy report.
In a news release Tuesday, attorneys for the Nichols family, Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci, said that an autopsy on Jan. 23 was conducted by "a highly regarded, nationally renowned forensic pathologist."
The report said a "severe beating" and "extensive bleeding" led to Nichols' death on Jan. 10.
The report also said that injuries Nichols suffered on the Jan. 7 police encounter were "consistent with what the family and attorneys witnessed on the video" of the police confrontation.

The police department said that officers had two different "confrontations" with Nichols, after which the 29-year-old complained of shortness of breath and was taken to a Memphis hospital.
He died three days later at a Memphis hospital, officials said.
On Monday, Nichols' family and attorneys spoke out after they viewed the confrontation video with Memphis Police officers.
Ben Crump, one of Nichols' family attorneys, called the video appalling, horrible, heinous, violent, disturbing and "very troublesome on every level." He compared it to the Rodney King beating from decades ago.
