About the Book

Some Like it Scot
Title: Some Like it Scot
Author: Pepper Basham
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Release Date: April 8, 2025
Genre: Christian Contemporary Romance

She lives her life on the fly. His heart is double-knotted to home. Can two different souls create a life together?

Popular travel writer and podcaster Katie Campbell roams the world collecting other people's stories. She's built a career as "Miss Adventure," known for saying yes to anything new--country, food, or experience--and predictably finding those adventures taking a downward turn into misadventures.

Offered the chance to explore her ancestral roots through a three-week Edwardian experience, Katie finds herself immersed in the beauty and eccentricity of Scotland. In her period attire, with traditional foods and activities, the opportunities for misadventures are endless, especially with the presence of a maniacal macaw, a jealous co-worker, and an all-too-surly Scotsman.

Reclusive and protective Graeme MacKerrow doesn't venture far from his island home. A stoic Scotsman, Graeme's comfort zone has always been family, and after his sister's death, he's even more determined to save the MacKerrow ancestral home and keep those he loves close. The sudden intrusion of a six-foot-one American lass, famous for her traveling misfortunes, was far from his plan.

As this world of folklore, community, and woodworkers-in-kilts tempts Katie to discover her own story, could this one grand series of misadventures lead her directly to where she belongs? And would a settled-in-Scot ever risk loosening his grip on what's familiar to allow a wanderlust writer a home in his heart? How could their very different worlds share the same page of life's story when "home" is in two very different places? But maybe home--and the future--isn't quite what either one imagined it would be. Maybe home is less about a place . . . and more about a person.

My Thoughts:

Wow, this was a fun read. A really fun read, and a deep read. One that really makes us take a little closer look at ourselves and see what makes us special to others. To take a closer look at why we might just be loved for who we are. It also was a story of where is home truly found.

Katie Campbell is a walking disaster, or that is how she would describe herself. Yet, she uses all her misadventures for a popular pod cast show she hosts. She is tall, clumsy, and prone to accidents, whether by her own fault of not. Trouble seems to follow her. However, I liked how she put a positive spin on the misfortunes and turned it into a business.

Graeme MacKerrow, a somewhat reclusive and grumpy Scottish man with many talents, is a homebody. He loves his family and his home, and he wants to stay put where he is. He is out of his comfort zone right now, as he has allowed a group of people to come to his ancestral home for an Edwardian experience. He needs the money to take care of said home. That is where he and Katie have their first meeting.

Throw in past family hurts, broken hearts, secondary characters, some that are lovable, others not so much, a parrot, cow, etc. and a great big dash of swoon and you have a story that is very hard to put down. My favorite author Basham book yet.

I was provided a copy of this novel by the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.

My Thoughts and More on Dawn of Grace: Mary Magdalene's Story by Jill Eileen Smith

About the Book

Book: Dawn of Grace: Mary Magdalene’s Story

Author: Jill Eileen Smith

Genre: FICTION / Christian / Biblical

Release date: February 18, 2025

From her earliest days, Mary Magdalene has known fear and loss at a level so deep she has no hope of surfacing. Bound to the demons within her and incapable of freeing herself, Mary walks in shadow–until one day she encounters a healer, a rabbi who is radically different from the religious leaders and family members who could do nothing to help her. One touch from Jesus and Mary is never the same.

Now Mary’s one mission in life is to serve the one who freed her. She is determined never to leave his side, fearing that if she loses him, she’ll return to her former bondage. Even when the unthinkable happens and her savior is arrested and sentenced to execution, she cannot abandon him as so many others did. Let her be buried in his tomb, for she cannot live without him.

On the brink of despair, Mary is about to discover that while the life of faith is never perfect, perfect love casts out fear–and Jesus makes all things new.

My Thoughts:

This was a riveting story and fictional account of Mary Magdalene told through her eyes of her life and times and how that was changed when she met Jesus of Nazareth. Please note, what we know of her factually is in the Bible, so the author does take artistic liberty in telling her story, especially her young life.

Starting from a young girl, we see Mary struggling for want of love. I also was curious how the author would handle the demon possession. I found the author's take on Mary messing around with things she should never have been in contact with, very apropos to children's lives. It was also very scary when the demons would take over Mary's body and speak through her. Mary's thoughts of trying to control them, instead of the other way, showed how much of a prisoner she really was.

I enjoyed reading this story during the Easter season as Jesus not only changed Mary, but the whole world.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.

Her research has taken her from the Bible to Israel, and she particularly enjoys learning how women lived in biblical times. Jill lives with her family in Michigan.

More from Jill

Dawn of Grace, Mary Magdalene’s story, is a biblical novel based on the life of Mary Magdalene. Step into first century Israel during the time of Jesus Christ and meet the woman whom Jesus healed from demon possession. See how her life went from one of despair to one of grace.

We learn, through Mary’s point of view, what it might have been like to follow the rabbi, Jesus, throughout Galilee and Judea for at least part of His ministry. She is with Him as often as possible, and one of the few women in His circle who stayed with Him all the way to the cross—and watched Him die.

In her grief, Mary learned where they buried Him and determined to return after Shabbat to anoint His beloved body one more time. But when she arrived, He was not where they had lain Him. Distraught, Mary searches for answers until she hears Jesus call her name. She is the first to see the resurrected Messiah, and she is never the same again.

In Dawn of Grace, we imagine how the things we read about in the gospels might have played out through Mary’s eyes. The Bible tells us that she helped support His ministry out of her means, and she is mentioned often as one of His devoted followers. What emotions did she experience as she went from learning about a coming kingdom to hearing her Messiah speak about His coming death and resurrection? The men didn’t understand. Did she? What did she feel in that moment when she thought all hope was lost?

I hope you will gain a new perspective of what it might have been like for one of the New Testament’s most famous women, one who lived in a world where women were not given much notice or status. Yet Jesus included them, and even elevated them. The Scriptures tell us that there is no difference between male and female in God’s eyes. He loves us all. Mary got the chance to see God’s care for her and all women in a way she never expected. God’s love for all is the same today.

My Thoughts and More on Before the King: Joanna's Story by Heather Kaufman

About the Book

Book: Before the King: Joanna’s Story (Women of the Way Book 2)

Author: Heather Kaufman

Genre: FICTION / Christian / Biblical

Release date: January 21, 2025

Joanna’s wealthy family aspires to Herod’s inner circle, but when her father’s esteemed position in the Sepphoris Sanhedrin is threatened, her family harbors a dark secret. Entangled in the complexities of aristocratic life and an impending arranged marriage, Joanna is caught between her own desires and maintaining appearances. When tragedy strikes, Joanna grapples with a new future that challenges her sense of duty and hope for love.

Years later, Joanna is forever changed when a rabbi comes preaching a new kingdom and healing the sick. As she contributes to his ministry, Joanna treads a perilous path between a court that mocks Jesus of Nazareth, disciples who view her with suspicion, and a husband who guards his own secrets. With pressure increasing on all sides, Joanna must decide where her allegiances lie and protect her relationship to the Christ, whose message is as compelling as it is dangerous.

Click here to get your copy!

My Thoughts:

This was an enthralling and engrossing read about Joanna, a follower of Christ who is mentioned in the New Testament a few times. Please be aware, that since we do not know more of her than what is mentioned in the Scriptures, this is a fictional account.

As the title suggests, this is Joanna's story, and we follow along in her footsteps starting as a young girl living in a well to do Sadducee household. This is where we see her life is altered and she is thrown on a course of life by no choice of hers. As she grows into a young woman, we see that that continues for a while.

I was interested in the relationships formed of the people she met, the circumstances she saw, and her meeting with Jesus as all of these shaped her life, and more importantly her faith. From the political drama surrounding King Herod to the dangerous liaisons and people in the court. I liked that the author gave us an explanation of the Sadducees' views and that we saw some of the happening's kind of like an insider, through Joanna's eyes.

Again, this was a riveting read, and though fictional takes us back to the Bible and to the One who gives hope to us all. Great for an Easter read or anytime.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.

More from Heather

Hello, Fellow Book Lover!

My heart behind the Women of the Way series is to highlight the beauty of Jesus through the eyes of some of his lesser-known female followers. In Before the King, we behold Jesus through the eyes of Joanna. Although she’s only named twice in Scripture, the little we do know about her is compelling. In Luke 8:1-3, we discover that Joanna was healed by Jesus of an infirmity and then followed him, supporting his ministry from her own means. What’s so shocking is that she’s the wife of Chuza, Herod Antipas’ steward! During my research, I discovered that her husband’s position is better translated “procurator,” someone in charge of financial affairs. Such a position suggests that Chuza was a prominent man within Herod’s administration. But the surprises don’t end there! My research also indicated that Chuza was most likely Nabatean. Nestled just southeast of Herod’s own territory of Perea, Nabatea was a major world power at the time of Christ.

The more I researched, the more my jaw dropped to the ground. How did a Jewish woman married to a prominent Gentile within Herod’s administration come to support Jesus of Nazareth? Did her husband know? Did he approve? Did Herod himself ever find out? You’ll have to read Before the King to see just where my imagination took me!

I depict Joanna as caught between two courts—that of Herod Antipas and that of Jesus Christ. She chooses to risk everything for her faith and that choice pays off. The second time we see Joanna in Scripture is in Luke 24:10 as an eyewitness to the empty tomb. Not only did she behold the empty tomb, she gazed upon the risen Christ, for in Matthew 28:9 we read that as the women left, they encountered Jesus himself. What an amazing privilege to be one of the first to meet the risen Lord in the flesh!

I hope Joanna’s story encourages you to live a bold faith that clings to Christ, despite opposition. Our world now isn’t so different from hers then. Christ’s Kingdom is still advancing in the midst of political unrest, social division, and rampant greed. May we pin our hopes upon King Jesus, who is worthy of our devotion. Like Joanna, may we place all we have within his hands, deeming him worthy of the cost.

While you read, consider listening to the Before the King playlist! It’s full of inspirational music that ties into the themes from the book. Give it a listen HERE. Happy reading (and listening)!

Surrendering with you to Him,

Heather

My Thoughts and More on When the Sky Burned by Liz Tolsma

My Thoughts:

This was another interesting disaster story about a fire, maybe even a firenado, that happened in the town of Peshtigo, Wisconsin. I had not heard of this fire before that took so many lives, likely because it was overshadowed by the Great Chicago Fire that happened around the same time. That was fascinating to me and just goes to show how the right environmental conditions like wind and dryness can bring so much devastation to people.

This was a story of a young woman who is an artist and is capturing the beauty of the wildfires. She is happily engaged to be married later in the year and things seem to be going along smoothly. Until news that is just as devastating breaks out after the fire that has already changed her life forever. While reading this story, I felt the looming smoke and the choking conditions and knew things were going to get worse before getting better. I just didn't know how worse things would get for our poor heroine. However, there is always hope, even in the ashes.

My thanks to the author for bringing this story to life and giving us a peak at a little known, yet devastating fire.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.

More from Liz

I stared at my computer screen in front of me. For years, I had been searching for my great-grandmother, Anna. I got no good information. Census records in the US weren’t helpful. Some listed her birthplace as Czechoslovakia, while others had it as Austria. I had heard before that she might have been born in Czechoslovakia before, but never Austria. There were no records that I had come across that listed the city or town where she was born.

Until that one day. While searching for my great-grandmother, I ran across a passport application recorded in Warsaw, Poland, for an Anna with the same last name, though spelled differently. Her birthday was listed as 1903, which matched the birth year I knew for my great-grandmother’s niece. As I read through the application, my heart was pounding. This Anna was born in the United States but went to Dubne, Poland, with her family in 1906. It was now 1923, and she wanted to return to the US, and she would be living with…

I started to cry when I saw who her sponsor was. My great-grandfather. The name and address were correct. There could be no doubt about it. It had taken me years, but I finally made the jump to Europe and discovered that my great-grandmother was not born in Czechoslovakia but in what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire and is now Poland.

Of course, good little researcher that I am, I had to find out all I could about Dubne, the town they were from. That’s when I first came across the term Lemko. What on earth was that?

Lemkos are a Slavic people that settled in the Carpathian Mountains of Southern Poland, Northern Slovakia, and Western Ukraine. They are also known as Lemko Rusyns, Rusyns (especially those born in Slovakia, like my great-grandfather), and Carptho-Rusyns. The mountains kept the world at bay, and they developed their own language, customs, and form of Christianity. For the most part, they were very poor, many of them eking out a living from the rocky ground.

They lived in “black houses,” called that because the poorest people couldn’t afford to have a chimney built. The smoke from the cooking and heating fires stayed inside the house and covered the walls with black tar. If you look at the cemetery records from Dubne, you would be old if you lived into your fifties. Conditions were brutal.

The most the average Lemko could afford was one sheep or one pig. Since this was their most prized possession, they couldn’t take the chance of a wild animal or a neighbor taking it away, so it lived in the house with them.

With all of them. Up to eleven people would live in a two-room house. When I mentioned that in What I Left for You, my editor questioned if I had made a mistake. No, I didn’t. I have no idea how they fit all those people in there, but they did. As I was tracking one branch of our family tree, I kept coming up with people living in house 43. Over and over and over. They stuffed that house full. Grandparents, parents, and children all lived together. They may not have had much, but that forged the Lemkos into strong and resilient people.

I’m proud to be Lemko-Rusyn, and I’m thrilled to share this story with you. I infused Helena, the historical heroine, with as much of the Lemko spunk and spirit as I could. Last October, my daughter and I had the privilege to travel to Poland and Slovakia and see the Lemko homeland for ourselves. It helped me to write a better, richer story because I now understand where they came from and who they were. Enjoy Helena’s story and her journey during WWII and beyond. I hope you come to understand and appreciate the Lemko people as much as I have.

My Thoughts:

This is the second story of the drama of triplet sisters separated at birth when their widowed father gives two of them away. This is Mary's story. Mary has always known she was adopted, but for whatever reason she was not told the details. She loves her adopted family, but when she was eleven, she and her family had to go through another devastating blow. Now it is just her, her father, and three younger siblings. Unfortunately, her father has not been a good one for some years.

Daniel Winthrop has grown up with Mary and he loves her and wants to make her his wife. He sees how much she works for her family, and he wants to make her life easier. He has grand plans.

Young love is pure and sweet, but when heavy burdens come again and threaten to take all Mary holds dear, will Daniel be strong enough to let some of his plans go? Will their love burn brighter for the sacrifices or be snuffed out? There is a lot of emotion in this story. Daniel doing some growing especially when he regards Mary, and Mary, letting her burdens go.

This was a story of growth and maturity and loving someone through the thick and thin.

More from Lena

My mother died when I was 7 years old. Back in my growing up years, grown-ups didn’t tell children a lot of things. My aunt, who was living with my mother and father and older brother when I was born, gave me some surprising information when I was in my 30s. After my mother came home from the hospital with me, she had to go back in a little while later. She had surgery to remove a mass of bones and tissue they believed was my twin that didn’t develop.

I found that interesting, because there had been times over the years when I felt as if part of me was missing. I became fascinated with the connections between twins and other multiple births. This fascination planted the seed that became the stories of the McKenna Sisters series.

At one time, there was a lot of discussion about which influenced people more—heredity or environment. These discussions added depth for the story of the triplets. I prayed a lot when writing these books, and God helped me see how to connect the girls when they didn’t know about their other sisters.

They were definitely reared in totally different environments, and Mary’s was the hardest. It was difficult for me to put her through so much anguish.

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Release date: March 25, 2025

In the rugged Montana Territory, a Boston socialite’s bid for freedom collides with a rancher’s quest for a family.

According to Boston’s elite society, Ella Mountbatten has it all: status, prestige, and a bright future. What they don’t know is that her life as a socialite has become a gilded cage of abuse and oppression under the control of her cruel fiancé and domineering parents. Desperate to escape, Ella flees Boston and seeks refuge in the small town of Harmony Springs, Montana Territory, where her former friend now resides as the sheriff. But with her family determined to drag her back to Boston, Ella’s hard-won freedom—and her very life—hang precariously in the balance.

Rancher, Cody Brooks, is ill-equipped to be the guardian of three orphaned children. But that’s the situation he’s in after the death of his best friend. Now, what he needs is a wife to help provide love and stability to his makeshift family. My Thoughts:

A battered woman, a desperate man, and three orphaned children are thrust together to form a family none are too sure of. However, for survival this marriage of convenience needs to work, and it was a good one.

Ella Mountbatten has run away not only from a controlling family, but an abusive fiancé as well. Running to her longtime friend now turned sheriff for help. What she finds out west is more than she bargained for, a husband and three young children.

Cody Brooks has become the guardian to three young children, one a baby. Not only is he a single man, but he has a ranch to run as well. When his brother-in-law suggests a wife, Cody begins to see the reason in that. And at the right time, into his life walks Ella, who has some issues herself.

Starting out as just a marriage of convenience, these two quickly learn that they can rely on one another in the day-to-day chores, even with their past hurts. But when danger follows Ella from home, it will take all of their wits and love to stay alive because neither her father nor fiancé is ready to let her go. Just how much is Cody and Ella willing to sacrifice for one another?

This was a fun one, with plenty of heart, romance, and danger that really pulls you in this story. It is certainly one I will be rereading, and I cannot recommend it enough.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.

More from Lauralyn

Stories have a funny way of percolating in my mind. I’ll be driving or doing dishes or some other mundane activity, and all of a sudden, an idea pops into my head. What my mind does with it then determines the course of a story.

Here’s a peek at my thought process for The Rancher’s Unexpected Bride.

Marriage of convenience stories are fun—maybe I could write one. Oooh, and I love Montana. It should take place there. Historical, of course, since stepping back in time is also fun. Hmmm….who should the characters be? Maybe a socialite….or an heiress….where would someone like that be from? Philly? New York? Ooh, I know—Boston! Yeah, Boston. Let’s see, her name can be Ella, though that doesn’t sound terribly high society. Maybe Ariella, but she prefers being called Ella. And she wants to leave town because she feels that society life is suffocating her. Hmmm, that doesn’t quite seem like a strong enough reason. Oh! She comes from a stuffy family….with harsh parents….and an abusive fiance. That’s why she runs away. I can iron out the details later. Okay, so Ella runs from Boston to Montana. Now, who’s her love interest? A farmer might work, but why would they agree to a marriage of convenience? I suppose Ella could be a mail-order bride….hmmm, no, that might not work. She needs to leave in a hurry (the why to be determined later). Maybe the guy (let’s call him Cody—that’s a good name) is a widower raising young kids and needs a wife to help. Or….no, he took in the kids after their parents died. That’ll create an immediate need for a wife. Perfect! Actually, I think he should be a rancher instead.

And just like that, a story is born. Sometimes it comes to me in moments, other times in weeks. This story developed over a couple of years. I wrote one draft, decided it was too fluffy, and ended up giving it a complete rewrite. I’m very happy with how Ella and Cody’s story turned out. It’s a sweet, love-comes-softly romance, and I hope you enjoy it.

My Thoughts:

Here in this story, we have characters who all have been hurting since the death of their loved ones. Widow Molly and her two young boys, Grayson and Bryce are still reeling from the aftereffects of the tragic loss of their father. Meanwhile, widower Dirk is trying to move on with life after an accident stole his wife and daughter and part of his leg. He and his service dog Molly have decided to work on a ranch. That ranch that belongs to Tessa's aunt, and the ranch she and her boys will be staying at for the summer.

The adults in this novel are very mature especially in dealing with their situations and issues. I liked that they were very sensitive to one another, but especially to the young boys. This story really showed how even though they all carried around a very similar pain, it at times can feel that individually you are all alone. This was an emotional read of two hurting families, who find hope in new beginnings with one another.
