"Reunion Crossing: The Underground Book Readers (Book Seven)" by Terry Overton is written for readers 9-13 yrs old who enjoy dystopian Christian fiction, but this 65-year-old grandma enjoyed this series as well. This is book 7 in the series, but I have only read books 1 and 2 and 7. I want to read the other books as soon as I can. These books definitely give the faith message. I feel like I missed alot of the story since I haven't read all the books, I believe I would have enjoyed this book more if I had read the other books in order that they were written. But I say this series would be great as a family reading challenge.

About The Author

Terry Overton is a retired university professor of educational and school psychology. She has an Ed.D. in Special Education and a Ph.D. in Psychology.

Her professional experience includes teaching public school, teaching at the university level, and being a college dean.

She has two children, seven grandchildren, and one great granddaughter.

Her previous writing and publication experiences include textbook and journal articles in the fields of special education and school psychology. She now seeks to answer God’s call to share the good news and grow the church by writing Christian books and devotionals.

Over the years, Terry’s books have won the Mom’s Choice Award, Christian Indie Award, Firebird Book Awards, American Writing Winner Awards, Bookfest Winner Awards, Pencraft Award, Reader Views Silver Reviewers Award, and International Book Award Finalist. Her writing examines real world events with a Christian worldview. She enjoys writing for young children, middle grade readers, YA fiction, and adult level novels.

This book is book seven of The Underground Book Readers series. The series was inspired by talking with librarians about the concept of book banning and how Christian books are no longer predominantly displayed in school or community libraries. The series is designed to place kids in a different world where many things we take for granted or no longer available: books, schools, churches, freedom, and even parents. The book series stresses Christian family values and weaves Scripture in with the dystopian action-adventure series.

This book is being used in homeschool classrooms and church schools. A learning guide and free worksheets will soon be available to guide parents and teachers through the series.

I enjoyed reading "The Daughter of Rome" (The Emissaries Book 3) by Angela Hunt. It is the third book in the series, and I haven't read the first book but after reading this book I definitely want too. This novel is about the Christians being arrested for believing in The One True God. It has romance but it is impossible one because of one is a patrician and the other one is a plebeian. This book deals with the fire of Rome. The rumors state that Nero started it but then he blames the Christians. I am going to include my favorite quote from the book, through there a few excellent quotes, (“I prayed for Adonai to change my poor eyes, and He changed me instead.)”. This book really had me feeling some of the same emotions that Calandra felt which made me feel like she was real, yes, I know the book is fiction but when I read, I like to pretend the characters are real.

This book mentions Paul and Aquila and Priscilla, which I think believers will find it a real bonus. Yes, the book is a long read but definitely worth the time it took to read.

Thank you for joining me on this blog tour for THE DAUGHTER OF ROME, book three in the Emissaries series. The book stands alone, but it includes characters from books one and two, so people who have read those books will have a fuller understanding of who those people are. But no worries! If you haven’t read the first two books, you’ll still have no problem reading THE DAUGHTER OF ROME.

When I shaped the idea for this series, I had just finished The Jerusalem Road books, which centered on Jews who lived during Jesus’ life and ministry. I wanted to keep writing in this time period, so I shifted my focus from the Jews to the Gentiles—specifically, the people who came to faith through Paul’s ministry.

The first book in the series, THE WOMAN FROM LYDIA, is concerned with the seller of purple who hosted the Philippian church in her home. The second book, THE SISTERS OF CORINTH, features two competing sisters who lived, naturally, in Corinth. And the third book, THE DAUGHTER OF ROME, is about a young sculptress who lives in Rome during the time of Nero.

I have been fascinated by this time period ever since reading THE SILVER CHALICE and THE ROBE in my childhood. What would it have been like, I wondered, to live in a time when you could be executed simply for saying you believed in Jesus? Americans don’t really know what that’s like, but people in other parts of the world still deal with that danger today. The Bible tells us that this kind of danger is not going away—it will be prevalent during the end times as well. So I wanted to explore the world of the ancient Romans, and hoped to pull some lessons from it that will apply to us today.

I’ve also been amazed at what we can still see of ancient Greek and Roman art—how did they sculpt those massive statues? One such work, the Colossus, was so large it stood in the harbor and ships reportedly entered beneath it!

THE DAUGHTER OF ROME features one other fascinating element—a question that garners as much debate as “who killed JFK?” The story takes place during the time that the Great Fire of Rome nearly leveled the entire city, and to this day, no one is certain how it began. The people blamed Nero, Nero blamed the Christians, and it may have been a kid illegally cooking his dinner at the racetrack.

I have really enjoyed all of Jill Eileen Smith's novels. This novel did not disappoint either. This is a story about Mary Magdalene, told in her own words. Yes, the book is fiction, but it does tell the real Biblical story. I really like reading stories like these because it makes me realize that Biblical characters were just like us and had lives that weren't told completely in the Bible. Of course, these lives are completely imagined by the author, but this author writes about the time period so well the reader can actually see the scenes in their minds. I really liked reading how Mary Magdalene might have felt when she had the demons living in her and how she was afraid that the demons might overtook her again and how she felt during the crucifixion.

" The Rancher’s Unexpected Bride" by Lauralyn Keller is a novel of a marriage of convenience. I was kept turning the pages from the first page to the end. My heart was sad for Ella and Cody's circumstances. Yes, this book is a romance, but it is also a bit of a mystery in why Ella's father and her former finance, (the one she ran away from) determine to do everything they can to bring her back to Boston. If you have read many novels like this then I'm sure that you probably know the reason, but I can't tell you why because it will be a spoiled alert, but I can tell you even if you do know the reason this book is a worthwhile read, and it will inspire your heart. I really like the way Cody and Ella learn to share past heartaches and overcome together. The three children that Cody has taken to raise melted my heart.

Stories have a funny way of percolating in my mind. I’ll be driving or doing dishes or some other mundane activity, and all of a sudden, an idea pops into my head. What my mind does with it then determines the course of a story.

Here’s a peek at my thought process for The Rancher’s Unexpected Bride.

Marriage of convenience stories are fun—maybe I could write one. Oooh, and I love Montana. It should take place there. Historical, of course, since stepping back in time is also fun. Hmmm….who should the characters be? Maybe a socialite….or an heiress….where would someone like that be from? Philly? New York? Ooh, I know—Boston! Yeah, Boston. Let’s see, her name can be Ella, though that doesn’t sound terribly high society. Maybe Ariella, but she prefers being called Ella. And she wants to leave town because she feels that society life is suffocating her. Hmmm, that doesn’t quite seem like a strong enough reason. Oh! She comes from a stuffy family….with harsh parents….and an abusive fiance. That’s why she runs away. I can iron out the details later. Okay, so Ella runs from Boston to Montana. Now, who’s her love interest? A farmer might work, but why would they agree to a marriage of convenience? I suppose Ella could be a mail-order bride….hmmm, no, that might not work. She needs to leave in a hurry (the why to be determined later). Maybe the guy (let’s call him Cody—that’s a good name) is a widower raising young kids and needs a wife to help. Or….no, he took in the kids after their parents died. That’ll create an immediate need for a wife. Perfect! Actually, I think he should be a rancher instead.

And just like that, a story is born. Sometimes it comes to me in moments, other times in weeks. This story developed over a couple of years. I wrote one draft, decided it was too fluffy, and ended up giving it a complete rewrite. I’m very happy with how Ella and Cody’s story turned out. It’s a sweet, love-comes-softly romance, and I hope you enjoy it.

I really loved the book "Up From the Dust" which was also written by Heather Kaufman and so I was excited to be able to read this book. I can honestly say I wish there was more books in this series but who knows there might be some coming, these books are wonderful. When I started reading this book I was reminded of my son because when he was little, he had seizures. Reading the descriptions that the author described about Joanna's sister was realistic, Now, I know the book isn't about seizures but to me it was real. I was kept reading the pages in this novel and I will say "Before the King: Joanna’s Story" (Women of the Way Book 2) by Heather Kaufman is true to Biblical insights and principals as much as possible for a fiction book to be. I don't remember any books about Joanna before, so this was it was a nice change to read about an unknown or forgotten character to me. If you a fan of Christian fiction you need to do yourself a favor and read both of these books.

Hello, Fellow Book Lover!

My heart behind the Women of the Way series is to highlight the beauty of Jesus through the eyes of some of his lesser-known female followers. In Before the King, we behold Jesus through the eyes of Joanna. Although she’s only named twice in Scripture, the little we do know about her is compelling. In Luke 8:1-3, we discover that Joanna was healed by Jesus of an infirmity and then followed him, supporting his ministry from her own means. What’s so shocking is that she’s the wife of Chuza, Herod Antipas’ steward! During my research, I discovered that her husband’s position is better translated “procurator,” someone in charge of financial affairs. Such a position suggests that Chuza was a prominent man within Herod’s administration. But the surprises don’t end there! My research also indicated that Chuza was most likely Nabatean. Nestled just southeast of Herod’s own territory of Perea, Nabatea was a major world power at the time of Christ.

The more I researched, the more my jaw dropped to the ground. How did a Jewish woman married to a prominent Gentile within Herod’s administration come to support Jesus of Nazareth? Did her husband know? Did he approve? Did Herod himself ever find out? You’ll have to read Before the King to see just where my imagination took me!

I depict Joanna as caught between two courts—that of Herod Antipas and that of Jesus Christ. She chooses to risk everything for her faith and that choice pays off. The second time we see Joanna in Scripture is in Luke 24:10 as an eyewitness to the empty tomb. Not only did she behold the empty tomb, she gazed upon the risen Christ, for in Matthew 28:9 we read that as the women left, they encountered Jesus himself. What an amazing privilege to be one of the first to meet the risen Lord in the flesh!

I hope Joanna’s story encourages you to live a bold faith that clings to Christ, despite opposition. Our world now isn’t so different from hers then. Christ’s Kingdom is still advancing in the midst of political unrest, social division, and rampant greed. May we pin our hopes upon King Jesus, who is worthy of our devotion. Like Joanna, may we place all we have within his hands, deeming him worthy of the cost.
