LATANA Fragments #3 Silver emulsion on watercolor paper 20 x 24 in. Latana is a multi-media artist working with photography, sculpture, drawing, painting, and digital processes. She has exhibited in Switzerland, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, and the Pacific Rim. Her career began in fashion photography and reportage but she became passionate about fine art after moving to California. Since then, Latana has continued to expand her craft while traveling the world. Latana has authored three books; “Fragments”, a conceptual collection of images of an abandoned villa in Tuscany, Italy. “The Phukthar Monastery” which benefits children and the monks of this monastery in the Himalayas and “Barely Exposed” explores the visual realm of sixty young adults, geographically and ethnically diverse in background, but united through this unique series of intimate portraits. Latana’s latest endeavors unite photography and sculpture, creating unique works that cross traditional boundaries. Her use of strong contrast and emotionally charged imagery seeks to ignite a sense of passion and mystery for the viewer. “My art deals with self-expression. I capture an instant in time and grasp it until I can transform it to fit my private world. It is a way to seize the passage of time and control it. I hold on to my loved ones, linger in quiet spaces and cling to life a bit longer.”

“This painting was conceived to explore Trump’s cozy relationship with the NRA and resulting gun-related deaths from 2017 thru 2019 (excluding suicides). However, it soon expanded to also highlight some of his numerous visual and speaking gaffes, his bogus bone spur-related draft deferment, his call to rake the forests to prevent wildfires and Trump’s failure to see and react to the dangers of Covid-19, including his irrational disdain for protective face masks. Fortunately, Trump recently had an epiphany regarding the latter..... “I had a mask on. I sort of liked the way I looked. OK. I thought it was OK. It was a dark black mask, and it looked OK. It looked like the Lone Ranger.” Now that’s progress!”

From 1983 to 1985, as a student at New York University (NYU), Antonio Cortés was in contact with renowned artists, tutors and teachers, such as John Kacere (1920-1999) and Larry Rivers (1923-2002), with whom he expanded his training in the visual trade and internalized his affinity for Pop Art and the theme of emigrants. With a professional career of over 50 years, in this Puerto Rico native’s work, each topic within a wide range of proposals, is backed by continuous research, and the experimentation of means with the support of technique. Obsessed with the passing of time, it was natural for me to consider the fate of women. I have chosen to work with young women, not professional models, captured in a natural light. Blatný, the son of the writer Lev Blatný, was a member of the Skupina 42 (Group 42 - association of Czech modern artists). In March 1948, after the communist seizure of power in his native country, Blatný left his country, just one of many figures in Czech Literature who chose to emigrate rather than go underground. However, he found life in exile difficult, as did many other émigré Czech writers such as Ivan Diviš. During his subsequent life in the United Kingdom, he spent time in various mental hospitals.
Jaroslav Gebr (1926-2013) enjoyed a long career starting from Europe’s most renowned academies (Prague, Munich, Florence) and spending 50 years in Hollywood creating one of the most stunning series of works from the film sets of Twentieth Century Fox in the 60s on to some of the most iconic films of our times. He did murals, portraits and visual effects for productions like “The Sound Of Music,” “Camelot,” “Dune,” “The Sting,” “Scarface,” television’s “Night Gallery,” “24” and countless others. During President Gerald Ford’s administration, The U.S. Armed Forces commissioned two portraits by Gebr to be hung in the White House and Pentagon.

“Liminal space... the world in-between - between a world I live in and a world I listen to, that has always been what has driven my imagery. Since I read Edna St Vincent Millay’s poem ‘Renascence,’ the place in between life’s state of being and how we treat the other, has been an internal focus. Watching the world move from continent to continent, seeing humanity being uprooted as they seek a solid resting place makes my landscapes evolve. The branches, the thickets, the thorns reveal the human tales. As I work on Yupo paper, an unstable ground in itself, the moving ink and moving graphite speak to those emotions.”

“I was born in Kandy, Sri Lanka and now live in Australia. I am a printmaker and mixed media artist. My work is inspired by my experiences in landscapes where I have had time to walk and explore where humans and the natural world collide. I am drawn to camping near wetlands where there is a variety of habitats and food sources for birds and other life. My recent work explores the protracted dry periods during the ‘boom and bust’ cycles of intermittent wetlands. The work depicts the landscape from above and interprets the textures and patterns formed by decay, wind, the presence and absence of water, insects, animals and birds.”

“My abstract works are painted in oil or acrylic colors. The motifs used are predominantly environmental and nature impressions, which later emerge intuitively as a fantasy structure. Each work of art develops out of a painting process, i.e. first the intellectual framework and the construction, the division of the painting surface is roughly defined. The works of art on display are stimulating, painterly impressions that have a very specific dynamic; their own open development process. They are compelling thoughts that develop into a flowing canon of innermost feelings on the canvas.”

Dorothea Van De Winkel creates wall and floor tapestries with abstract designs which can be integrated and adjusted in a specif space (colour, form, size). Her works can be seen as living, stand-alone art objects or as center points or material for interior design. Tapestry can be used in modern buildings for muting sound transmission as well as it adds a feeling of warmth. Dorothea has been working as an independent professional textile artist and design since 1985, managing her own gallery Galerij Theaxus since 1992, which includes both a studio space and show room.

“If there is one thing that stirs my heart, it is the labyrinth of mystery and wonder of the natural world. If there is one thing that I wish to share in this life, it is to inspire others into recognising the majesty of that which we are all already part of. As an artist, this is what drives me to create, as well as a general concern and care for the environment and the strain it is currently under. I have no formal art training, however, my background in psychology and natural healing has inspired and informed this creative orientation. ‘The Temple’ is the third installment of a body of work that I have titled the ‘GAIA Series | The Great Music’ in which I document an unfolding narrative around the natural world, a creation myth of sorts. The first two drawings were not associated with any specific region per se, however, this drawing is a direct response to time spent walking the Kumano Kodo trail in Japan in 2019. Perhaps it is a result of the practice of Shinto, where nature spirits (Kami) are recognised and revered as a bridge between the seen and unseen worlds, that makes the feeling of an otherworldly presence peering out between the moss-covered rocks and branches of this region so palpable. I titled this work about a year prior to even going to Japan, it was only while walking through these forests that I realised that ‘the temple’ was a tree. A temple is defined as a structure devoted to the worship of the Sacred, and we often hear that we should relate to our bodies as such… or any other vessel that carries life. I doubt it was mere coincidence that the creation of this work aligned with the lockdown period where the global focus was oriented around health, mortality, lungs, air quality, and the breath, while wildfires continued to ravage the lungs of this planet. Breath is life, and it would seem evident that any narrative that disregards the notion of interconnection is no longer viable. As biologist David Haskell writes, “We cannot step outside life’s songs. This music made us; it is our nature.”
