Why We Love This Easy Agua Fresca Recipe

Recipes for authentic Mexican Agua Fresca โ€“ translated simply as fresh water โ€“ are generally made with pureed fruit, sugar, and water. Although some varieties can include seeds or grains.

I can tell you with great certainty that this is in fact an authentic agua fresca recipe, because my Mexican friend Adriana was standing over me, dictating every move I made while I was mixing this particular batch. (She is, thankfully, a stickler for following long-rooted traditions.)

She taught me that, while there are no real โ€œrulesโ€ for making classic fresh water, the basic requirements are pretty obvious. It must contain A) water and B) something fresh like fruit or veggies. Our simple recipe blends strawberries and pineapple with cold water and sugar. But weโ€™ve also listed several tasty options below for changing up the type of fruit or boozing up this otherwise nonalcoholic party beverage.

However you choose to blend up a batch, this easy summer drink is wonderfully refreshing and perfectly sweet!

Ingredients You Need

You only need a handful of 4 ingredients to make our simple and refreshing agua frescas recipe:

  • Strawberries โ€“ hulled and cut in half
  • Pineapple โ€“ peeled and chopped into 1-inch sections
  • Water โ€“ the colder the better
  • Sugar โ€“ granulated white sugar or other preferred sweetener

Thatโ€™s it! You can use frozen or fresh fruit, but I do recommend that your strawberries and pineapple be at least chilled before blending.

Recipe Variations and Serving Suggestions

  • I like the perfectly sweet strawberry-pineapple combination in this homemade agua fresca recipe the best, but you can make it with nearly any fresh fruit including: cantaloupe, watermelon, cucumber, mangos, guava, melons, berries or even just freshly squeeze lime juice.
  • Kick up your agua fresca a bit by adding a shot of your favorite vodka, tequila, or rum for an alcoholic summer cocktail.
  • Add a splash of sparkling soda water when serving, for a bit of effervescence!
  • Make this a slushy-style frozen aqua fresca recipe simply by replacing the water with 8 cups of ice cubes. You can add splashes of water as you blend to make it looser if needed.
  • As-is this recipe makes approximately 8 services. Halve or double the ingredients to make as many drinks as you like!
  • I love to enjoy these fruity drinks in a tall glass with lots of ice and a wedge of fruit as garnishment.
  • For other drink garnishes try this beverage with hibiscus flowers, some form of citrus wedge, berries (such as blackberries or blueberries), herbs like mint or rosemary, or cherries, if you like.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between aguas frescas and juice?

Usually, โ€œregularโ€ juice is made by squeezing sweet liquid from fruit. Itโ€™s either served as-is, or sometimes sugar is added.

Agua fresca, on the other hand, blends the whole fruit into water and adds sugar. The result is a super refreshing drink with LOTS of delicious fruit flavor and just the right amount of sweetness.

What to serve with aquas frescas?

This terrifically refreshing summer drink pairs perfectly with a number of Mexican-inspired dishes. Sit back, relax, and enjoy flavorful, fruity fresh water while you snack on the BEST Guacamole or zesty Roasted Poblano Avocado dip.

Can I make authentic agua fresca ahead of time?

You can make this fruit drink recipe a day or so ahead of when you plan to enjoy, and store it in a pitcher in the fridge. Just stir and strain with a sieve, or pour it frothy as-is, over ice to serve.
