Short Summary
Path To Publishing was founded over two decades ago by Joylynn M. Ross, a traditionally published Black author who wanted to provide access to--as well as equip and empower people with--tools, information, and resources needed to share messages through books and publications.
Although Path To Publishing, as an author assistance and literary service provider, has been helping authors of all races and from various backgrounds achieve writing and publishing success, we’ve chosen to step into the huge role and responsibility of publisher by taking on The Price We Pay as our first traditionally published book because we believe it’s important to change the way race relations are being discussed in the public domain. It is our hope that this book will do more than entertain – that it will spark candid, open, mature discussions about how we view the state of current race relations and how it feels to look at that topic from another race’s perspective.
By supporting our campaign, not only are contributors showing their support for a Black authors who might otherwise struggle to get published, they are helping generate awareness of the need to have these important discussions and to bring them out in the open rather than allowing them to simmer and stew behind closed doors where they tend to explode outward in violent exchanges.
What We Need & What You Get
In order to devote the time and attention to this work that we believe it deserves, we are seeking to raise a little over $25,000 to pay for multiple rounds of editing, cover design, and interior formatting that will make the book beautiful, as well as galley proofs and paid reviews to ensure that we have our best shot at hitting the bestseller list while providing an excellence reading experience.

The Impact
When people can't talk to one another, they talk about each other. That's when misunderstandings grow as trust diminishes and suspicions increase. Eventually, things build up over time and come out in ugliness and violence. We want to open the door to mature discussion by allowing people from all walks of life to use The Price We Pay as a starting point for healthy conversations around racial issues that can produce real change.
If the entire amount is not raised, we will apply what we do raise to offset the expenses listed and will invest from our own pockets what is needed to cover the rest in producing the book. That is how strongly we believe in this project.
We guarantee our supporters that the book is coming out. That is not in question. We’ve got decades of experience in the publishing and literary industry and we’ve never failed to deliver.
Our perks include:
- Admission to a virtual launch party – we are going to strive to beat the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest number of attendees at a virtual launch party in recorded history (the current record is 34,731) – as well as invitations to virtual meet & greets with the author for those who choose the book club, book club deluxe, or classroom levels.
- We have just under 500 limited edition keepsake galleys of the ORIGINAL version of the book, which we will be giving away to those who contribute at Reward level 4 or higher. Those are in hand now and we will ship them out as soon as contributions are received until they run out.
- Access to our Magnetic Thought Leadership Training Programs to prepare our supporters to step up and be LEADERS in changing the conversation around race relations
- LEADERS Study Guide to help them navigate the challenges of difficult conversations in an inter-racial environment
- A LEADERS community designed to help provide support and encouragement to help them overcome the challenges of changing the conversation around race relations.
Risks & Challenges
The risks to the campaign are the following:
- Supply chain issues could cause prices to increase dramatically before the book is released or cause substantial delays in delivery.
Our solution:
- We are currently in talks with suppliers to lock in prices wherever possible;
- As for shipping, we will work with local printers where needed to ensure the cheapest, fastest, and highest quality shipping possible to all contributors;
- If enough funds are raised, we are also discussing the possibility of purchasing our own printing press to be sure we can deliver timely;
- This movement--this message--will not be stopped!
