Genesis 3: An Important Promise

Genesis 3:15

The ideal world god creates shatters as Adam and Eve eat the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Through their act of disobedience, sin enters the world, and because of their sin, comes death. In an instant, Adam and Eve are separated from God. With their spiritual death, every living thing begins a spiral of decay that will lead to physical death. The good God has created must now coexist with evil.

Immediately after the fall, God puts into motion a plan to reclaim all that has been lost. God tells the serpent (Satan) that the seed of the woman “will crush your head.” This prophecy in Genesis 3:15, is the first promise of a Savior given in Scripture. Even as God pronounces judgment, He refuses to let us go. Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection will one day restore humanity and all of creation to its former glory. Today, Jesus’s sacrifice makes it possible for every person to enjoy the intimate relationship Adam and Eve once had with God.

Karen Westbrook Moderow is a Bible teacher and author who brings a storyteller’s perspective to Scripture. She graduated magna cum laude from California State University at Long Beach with a BA in English Literature. She also holds an MFA from Chapman University in creative writing and a Master of Arts in Theology from Fuller Seminary. “It’s always been broken.”

Those were the words God put on my heart when I cried out to him in 2020 as I tried to plot The Unraveling of Emlyn DuLaine. My cry and the fact that I was plotting a novel were not exactly connected at first–though outlining does usually result in some weeping and gnashing of teeth for me. But I released my last novel in 2020 and happened to be working on my new series, The Rivenlea Sphere, when the world was suddenly thrown into chaos.

Being creative in the midst of a global pandemic and significant social unrest is not easy. In fact, I found it impossible. I stared at my unfinished outline, asking myself and God, “Why is everything so messed up? Why is this world so broken?” I know the theological answer to that question, but sometimes, the soul aches. Sometimes, it feels like the whole world is falling apart in a way it never has before.

When God reminded me that this world has, since the fall of man, always been broken, he also reminded me that he’s always been in the business of rescuing us, giving us hope, and pointing us toward a better future–one that is complete and holy. One that is fully redeemed.

Over the next two years, an underlying brokenness that begs for solution wove itself into my storyworld. The Unraveling of Emlyn DuLaine is intentionally whimsical and fun, filled with references to beloved classics and packed with wry humor. There’s a magical library, a sassy dragon, a fish-out-of-water protagonist determined to dodge every YA trope being thrown her way. This book came differently to me than my other ones.

It was less plot and structure, and more—what kind of book do I want to write?

I wanted riddles for them to solve, which created the Gamemaster character. I wanted a healthy family aspect, which began the process of repairing the relationships I’d burned in book one. And I wanted a character who knew exactly what she wanted and never waivered from that. Other scenes came from these wishes, like the chess game where the players are the chess pieces, and the War of Hearts played in the labyrinth.

Together, I think it blended nicely, and I can’t wait for readers to get ahold of it!

Mystery thriller isn't my normal genre read but when a good storyline like secret society meets exclusive yacht trip including two former friends, I was intrigued. Naya and Yana are inducted into an exclusive society and embark on an extravagant trip to Bermuda that quickly takes a turn for the worst. When secrets,and scandals start to surface, someone on board goes to any lengths to keep it from coming to full light. Unfortunately, death of classmmates on board is how far the killer will go and the girls must find out who it is before they become another casualty in this murder mystery at sea.
