Frequently asked questions about freelance writing jobs
It’s very possible to make $1,000 per month as a freelance writer. About 60% of freelance writers worldwide make more than $2,500 per month, according to the ATFW 2023 survey.
You can get started as a freelance writer by:
-Creating awesome samples
-Building a presence on LinkedIn and Twitter as a freelance writer
-Asking friends and family if they need writing done for their businesses
-Joining job platforms like Upwork, Ndash, or Clearvoice and applying for jobs
-Applying for jobs on writing job boards (like this one) and in jobs newsletters
-Pitching clients on your services through email
-Creating a website with a blog and optimizing it for SEO
The amount you should charge for a 500-word article will depend on factors such as your experience and expertise, the complexity of the topic, and whether interviews or in-depth research are required. An average rate would fall around $100 to $200. Inexperienced writers may charge less and experts may charge closer to $400 or $500.
About 66% of freelancers make less than $5,000 per month, 18% make between $5,000 and $10,000, and 16% make more than $10,000 per month, according to our 2023 survey. 
About 60% of the new freelance writers we surveyed made $2,500 or less in their first year of freelancing, while about 30% made between $2,500 and $5,000. Higher income levels come with more years of experience.
Freelancers get paid in a variety of ways. You can charge by the hour, by the word, using a fixed price, or using a retainer model. You can also charge upfront, 50% upfront and 50% postpaid, or 100% postpaid. See how writers from our 2023 income survey said they charge here.
