A big thank you Rosemarie Corrigan FRQA FRSB as chair and Joanne Donald, FRQA and Fabrizio Maniglio who co-presented with me this week, and to the Research Quality Association (RQA) team for organizing and hosting such a high-information-density session on "AI and QA – What Are the Essentials?"
The session was a deep dive into the role of AI in pharmaceutical quality assurance, covering topics like:
- Practical applications of AI in clinical trials and QA processes, including predictive modeling, NLP, and decision support systems.
- The evolving regulatory landscape with insights into the EU AI Act, FDA guidance, and EMA reflection paper.
- Governance frameworks and the challenges of implementing AI responsibly while maintaining compliance with GxP principles.
Here are a few standout quotes from the session:
- “AI isn’t here to replace us; it’s here to augment our intelligence and make processes smarter and more efficient.” – Hans de Raad
- “Even low-risk applications under R&D exemptions must demonstrate fitness for purpose (under the EU AI Act) and comply with rigorous validation standards.”– Joanne Donald
- “Governance must be adaptive, not static, to meet the rapid advancements in AI technologies.” – Fabrizio Maniglio
A major highlight was the audience engagement through thought-provoking polls and Q&A, with key takeaways like:
- The strong potential of NLP and machine learning in transforming QA processes.
- The importance of maintaining human oversight to prevent over-reliance on AI systems.
- An overwhelming interest in forming a dedicated AI Special Interest Group (SIG) within the RQA to foster collaboration, share best practices, and keep members ahead of the curve in this fast-evolving field.
Looking forward, the development of the RQA AI SIG is an exciting step forward. It’s a platform where we can continue to explore the intersection of AI, quality assurance, and compliance, ensuring that RQA members remain thought leaders in this space.
Thank you again to everyone who participated and contributed to this conversation. The future of AI in QA is here, and I’m thrilled to be part of shaping it with such an engaged community.

It’s been a busy month for Anne Marie Chebib BA (Hons), PGDip, since officially taking over the reins of the United Kingdom Crowd Management Association (UKCMA) from Eric Stuart QPM.
In this episode she speaks to Gary Twining-Wright and me of her hopes for the future of the association.
We begin by asking her if she’s got her feet properly under the table yet. Almost, she says with a smile as the decision to restructure the Board to accommodate the needs of a growing membership, made two things clear. Firstly, how much had already been done. Secondly how much still needs to be done.
The good news is she and the new team are all eager to take the association through the next stage of the journey.
We talk of her appointment and if it will be a source of inspiration for others. As one would expect from such a down to earth person, Annie speaks to other female trailblazers, like Satia Rai F.ISRM DIR.IPSA, Heather Baily, Michelle Russell Vanessa Twining-Wright and many others.
She also talks of the value of the15years she spent collaborating with her predecessors and is well aware of the size of the footsteps she follows.
(In my opinion, she has nothing fear and she is the right person to lead this next stage of the journey.)
EDI occupies a good part of this section, covering topics such as race and how we hope at some future point – no one will be astonished a woman is elected/selected to lead any organisation.
We touch on the importance of the Safer Crowds Safer Venues Supporting Document (NOT GUIDANCE) which is available for download at https://lnkd.in/eSD2n2AV
This is a fantastic collaboration between three associations and fifty authors. It’s only the first version and work has already begun on version 2.
We then discuss the enduring question of will it make people feel safe, and more likely to come out!
Big thanks to Michael Kill for using all his contacts to get in the press.
Annie goes into a little more detail of the new Board structure, and I ask how she’s going to manage a room full of such strong voices – especially now she’s got more Chairs than a posh dining-room table.

CPOs, Are You Reacting Too Quickly Without Observing?
I saw a video from a high-profile event, and it got me thinking. A musician was performing when a man came up to dance with him. The CPO on duty didn’t even pause to assess the situation—he rushed in, ready to push the man away.
Now, imagine the shock when the musician stepped in and pulled the CPO back. Why? That “man” was the host of the event—the person who paid for the performance in the first place!
From what I’ve heard, the CPO has since tendered an apology, which shows accountability and professionalism. But it also raises an important question: How can you follow your principal and not study enough to know who organized the event?
Key Lessons for CPOs:
🔍 Know the Key Players: Before an event starts, familiarize yourself with the host, VIPs, and other key guests.
👀 Pause and Observe: Not every approach is a threat. Take a moment to evaluate the situation.
Your actions reflect your principal’s image and reputation—always act with professionalism and discretion.
Emotional Intelligence Matters: It’s not just about being alert; it’s about reading the room, understanding context, and knowing when to act.
This video reminds me that executive protection is more than just a standing guard. It’s about being intelligent, aware, and calm under pressure.
To our CPO and Cpp community, I ask: How can we do better? How do you balance vigilance with understanding your environment?
