One of the best pieces of career advice I've heard in one of the most engaging career panels I've attended this year! What made this panel so effective was the authenticity of the discussion. For two hours, students asked real, sometimes vulnerable questions about career pathways, and the panelists responded by sharing their own successes and failures. No career path is a straight line, and these young professionals provided invaluable insights to help prepare students for the adventures that lie ahead.

About to prove to adcoms why you’re not going to be an admissions bust and transfer to University of Denver’s MBA program. ‘Tis the season for MBA programs to host veterans for visit days! We wanted to offer up some advice for veterans about to start their visits and give a consolidated list in the comments of the visits programs are hosting. If we miss any please comment! So when you get to these visit days, what should you do? Here’s a few tips from the sitreps team we’ve gathered from adcoms, vets clubs, and alumni: 1) The visit is a chance a to evaluate the school, learn about their career outcomes and chat with veterans and learn about their experiences. 2) Be memorable: take the time to introduce yourself to the admissions staff and faculty, send follow ups after you meet. They meet thousands of people, so sticking out positively is crucial to maximize your admission chances. 3) Attending a veterans visit day does not mean you are going to automatically get in. You still need to do well on the gmat and show why in your mba apps. 4)Some schools value and take inventory of visits. Other schools do not care. Assume every school does and show real, sincere interest and not check the box action. When I was at Wharton I would get calls and emails from candidates saying some version of “so, I was told to contact vets clubs…” as if that was a magic phrase that required no further action (full disclosure, there was no magic phrase and the vets club had no real ability to recommend or refer candidates). 5) Be on best behavior, you’re not in the ready room with the team anymore. Some schools do solicit feedback from students on potential applicants when they visit. Assume every school does. 6) Have fun! This is the start of a new journey for you. Ask the questions you are most concerned about and don’t worry about “dumb Qs”. 7) Don’t undersell yourself: with the exception of a very few people your stories and experiences are as interesting and unique as anyone else’s. 8) On the flip side, don’t go in believing that you as a veteran have a monopoly on grit and leadership. 9) Be gracious to those who ask “dumb” questions about your service.
