Book Review: Darkness Calls The Tiger

15 May

Wow! That’s what I have to say about Janyre Tromp‘s newest historical novel, Darkness Calls The Tiger. This book will easily make my best of 2024 list. Besides its unique setting, the characterization is masterful. You do not want to miss this one!

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Imperial Japan devours the southern portion of Burma, intent on taking over mainland Asia. Unaware of the coming darkness, Kailyn Moran drifts in her role as the only daughter of a widowed missionary.

As whispers of war snake through the Kachin mountains, Kai’s father is convinced God will protect the mission. He entrusts the village to her and the kind yet inexperienced new missionary, Ryan McDonough, while he makes routine visits to neighboring villages.

War descends like a tempest upon the mountain peaks, and an unbreakable bond forms between Kailyn and Ryan as they unite to provide solace to both villagers and the flood of refugees. Despite their tireless efforts, a brutal enemy shatters almost everything they love, pushing Kailyn to embark on a path of unrestrained vengeance.

Afraid he’s losing the woman he loves, Ryan fights to protect Kai from the deadly consequences of her choices. But in the face of destruction, can he convince her of the power and freedom of forgiveness?

Janyre Tromp is an award-winning and best-selling writer and veteran editor with a deep love for history.

Her mid-20th century historical novels always simmer with a healthy pinch of deliciously creepy suspense and include Darkness Calls the Tiger, Shadows in the Mind’s Eye, and O Little Town.

And all that editing and writing happens in her unfinished basement when she’s not hanging out with her family, two troublesome cats, and slightly eccentric Shetland Sheepdog.

You can find her all over social media or on her website.

And just in case you get to meet in person some day, you pronounce that first name Jan-ear.

My Impressions:

Darkness Calls The Tiger is one of those books that stays with you long after you turn the last page. This historical novel set in Burma (modern-day Myanmar) during WWII is above-the-top excellent. The setting is so very unique — the mountain villages of the Himalayan range of Burma combined with the Japanese invasion — that I was googling as I read. This is a time and place I knew nothing about, but now feel like I was there along with the characters. And what characters they are! The narrative switches between the first person POV of Kailyn Moran and the third person POV featuring Ryan McDonough. Each has trouble identifying their place and purpose in the world. Kailyn is a child of the jungle, yet is an outsider. A child of missionaries, she has one foot in Burmese culture and another in the foreign-to-her world of her American ancestry. Ryan is in Burma to honor his mother, but wonders if he will ever feel at home. And home is important for both of them. As the Japanese attempt the conquest of the country, the two take very different paths to rectify their failings and guilt. In order to avoid spoilers, I will just say that Kai and Ryan become people they feel destined to be, but is that what God really wants? Both have foundations in faith, but war, loss, and fear twists that all around.

The novel is a riveting page-turner. It portrays the ugliness, brutality, and evil of a world at war, but strongly shines a light of redemption and restoration that pierces that darkness. It is a must-read for those who love historical fiction, especially from a new perspective or for those who love a really good story.

Very Highly Recommended.

Great for Book Clubs.

Audience: Adults.

About The Book

Loyally Luke

Title: Loyally, Luke
Series: Skymar #3
Author: Pepper Basham
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Release Date: May 14, 2024
Genre: Contemporary Christian Romance

Sometimes love means embracing the good, the bad. . . and even the impossible.

Dear Reader —

My name is Luke Edgewood, and there are few things in life that I require. Mainly black coffee. And flannel. And lots of solitude. And my dogs, Chewy and Indie. What I don’t need is romance, so I have no plans to change my thirty-year-old bachelor status anytime soon.

But my youngest sister thinks that by accepting a short-term construction job in the small European country of Skymar, that I’m going to follow along in her footsteps and discover my own romantic adventure. Nope. Bah humbug. The End. This time, her rom-com-movie senses are totally wrong.

Or maybe not. Because I’ve met a Grace Kelly lookalike who is annoying. . . until she isn’t. But she is impossible. As in, nothing can happen between us because she is a literal princess. Even though that’s easy to forget when we’re working together to restore a castle-like orphanage in a secluded mountain town and “forced proximity” includes a small closet, a secret one-hundred-year-old journal, and the tactile memory of an off-limits royal in my arms.

Basically, the whole situation has turned into an ooey gooey magical snow globe of romantic tropes complete with cute kids and an actual ball. Now, even my sentences are starting to sound like mush. Ugh. Send high levels of testosterone my way–I’m going to need it.

Excerpt

Luke turned to find Ms. St. Clare standing a few feet away from the doorframe where he’d been leaning. “And a genuine one?” She followed his gaze to the girls disappearing around the corner of the hall, those eyes flicking back to him with a hint of curiosity in them. “I didn’t realize you possessed one.”

Her gaze was softer today. Not quite as . . . unwelcoming. The loose curls that had escaped her bun and framed her face probably helped. It was hard to look mean with a halo of curls around someone’s face. He inwardly groaned. Halo of curls? Where on earth did that thought come from?

“I reserve smiles for friendly people.” He finagled the cookies into his coffee cup hand and tugged the papers from beneath his arm. “I emailed a copy of this estimate to Mr. Holton per his request, but here’s a paper copy I planned to leave for your review.”

She hesitated, as if caught off guard, and then took the proffered paper. “Thank you.”

He nodded, keeping to task. “I took some of the material costs from market prices, but I bet you could get a sizable discount if buying bulk. Do y’all have a contractor’s discount at some of your building supply stores? I reckon the orphanage is tax exempt.”

For the first time, Grace Kelly lost a bit of her posture. “I . . . I’m not certain about bulk purchases, but yes, the orphanage is under a special tax bracket.”

“Well, both will save you some money. The more you can save, the more the school can put back into these kids.” He took a sip of his coffee and gestured with his chin in the direction Faye and Amara had disappeared. “I’m wondering if you ought to have someone inspect the heating system too. Make sure it’s in good working order.”

“I know these types of buildings aren’t as insulated as newer structures.”

He sent her a look, but her attention was focused down the hallway. She had a delicate nose too. He pinched his eyes closed. “I’d imagine so.”

Quiet stirred greater temptation to look her way again, so he decided right then and there, he should probably leave. “The estimate has a detailed inventory of what’s wrong, so whoever you get to do the work, you at least have knowledge about what needs to be fixed so another team won’t try to take advantage of Cambric Hall.”

Her attention flashed back to him. “Are you not interested?”

His brows flew skyward. “Interested?”

“In the job,” she clarified, and he wanted to go hit his head against one of the stone walls, if for no other reason than to remove the memory.

“I figured you’d probably want to get someone else.”

One of her golden brows rose. “Because of your ogling me in the coffee shop?”

“Ogling?” He turned to face her. “I can assure you I wasn’t ogling, Ms. St. Clare. Ogling implies I had disrespectful thoughts or intentions, but that’s not the case.”

Her gaze searched his and some sort of itching feeling he couldn’t reach buzzed in his chest.

“And exactly what sorts of thoughts were you having?”

“Human ones.” Her stare held him, and his throat started to close up. Heat climbed his neck and started scorching his face. Even his beard started tingling. That stone wall was sounding better and better all the time. “You’re nice to look at. Like the view from these windows or the architecture of this building. That’s as far as my imagination went. Nothing but simple admiration.”

Silence followed again and he took such a large drink of coffee, it hurt to swallow.

“I think we may have gotten off to a poor start, Mr. Edgewood, and I’m afraid I’m to blame for that. And I’m sorry.” Her words drew his attention back toward her, those blue eyes examining his face, searching. “Would you allow me to start over?” She offered her hand, a hint of a smile on her lips. “I’m Ellie St. Clare.”

Red lights started flashing in the back of his mind at her sudden gentling. Unkind and demeaning proved an easy person to dislike and avoid.

But a woman who took responsibility for her actions and attempted to rectify them? Nope. Beam me up, Scotty! He didn’t need any reasons to like Grace Kelly, because then things like emotions started crowding in on solid good sense.

And Luke was a big fan of solid good sense and few emotional tangles.

In fact, he didn’t like any sort of tangles.

The same golden brow rose higher, waiting.

Ridiculous. Silly. He’d just treat her like anybody else he worked with. No problem.

Happy Release Day! — Every Time We Say Goodbye

14 May

Happy release day to Natalie Jenner. Her highly anticipated historical novel, Every Time We Say Goodbye, is now available!! Set in Rome during the 1950s with flashbacks to WWII, this is an immersive and evocative novel. I will share my thoughts in a few days, but in the meantime read all about it below.

The bestselling author of The Jane Austen Society and Bloomsbury Girls returns with a brilliant novel of love and art, of grief and memory, of confronting the past and facing the future.

In 1955, Vivien Lowry is facing the greatest challenge of her life. Her latest play, the only female-authored play on the London stage that season, has opened in the West End to rapturous applause from the audience. The reviewers, however, are not as impressed as the playgoers and their savage notices not only shut down the play but ruin Lowry’s last chance for a dramatic career. With her future in London not looking bright, at the suggestion of her friend, Peggy Guggenheim, Vivien takes a job in as a script doctor on a major film shooting in Rome’s Cinecitta Studios. There she finds a vibrant movie making scene filled with rising stars, acclaimed directors, and famous actors in a country that is torn between its past and its potentially bright future, between the liberation of the post-war cinema and the restrictions of the Catholic Church that permeates the very soul of Italy.

As Vivien tries to forge a new future for herself, she also must face the long-buried truth of the recent World War and the mystery of what really happened to her deceased fiancé. Every Time We Say Goodbye is a brilliant exploration of trauma and tragedy, hope and renewal, filled with dazzling characters both real and imaginary, from the incomparable author who charmed the world with her novels The Jane Austen Society and Bloomsbury Girls.

NATALIE JENNER is the author of the instant international bestseller The Jane Austen Society and Bloomsbury Girls. A Goodreads Choice Award runner-up for historical fiction and finalist for best debut novel, The Jane Austen Society was a USA Today and #1 national bestseller and has been sold for translation in twenty countries. Born in England and raised in Canada, Natalie has been a corporate lawyer, career coach and, most recently, an independent bookstore owner in Oakville, Ontario, where she lives with her family and two rescue dogs. “Evocative and transportive, filled with nuance and spiked with the violence of war, Darkness Calls the Tiger is a story of redemption in the midst of hopelessness.” –Tosca Lee, New York Times best-selling author

Excerpt

Ryan tripped up the ladder of the mission as Kai burst through the narrow door. Home.

Smoke from the indoor fire pits burned Ryan’s lungs, even from the doorway. He squinted, adjusting to the gloom of the windowless room.

“Kailyn Marie Moran, you are late.” John stepped around the chief fire pit of the family room, emerging out of the haze like the devil himself.

His eyes sparking, the anger there hot enough to start its own fire.

“And I don’t suppose you finished your Latin . . .”

In two long strides, the missionary stood in front of his daughter.

Grasping her chin, he forced her to face him. From across the room, Ryan could see the dents in her cheeks, could nearly taste the blood in his own mouth.

Ryan’s fist tightened on the doorframe, his body trembling against the effort to restrain himself. He wasn’t her father. Wasn’t her brother.

Wasn’t her protector.

“Where is that fool Ryan? What has happened?”

Kai gasped, her body weaving a moment before she collapsed to the floor.

She currently resides in South Mississippi with her husband and three children on their ten-acre homestead. Excerpt

“Are you positive he’s dead?”

Ranger nodded.

Moheenie screamed. “What do we do?”

“We call the police,” Terza and Ranger spoke in unison.

Ranger stood to remove the phone from his back pocket. “I’ll call them,” he said while moving away from the body.

Terza clenched her fists. “Maybe we should check the house. What if he was just murdered, and we caught them in the act?”

“Ranger, hold on!” Moheenie’s trembling hand reached out for her husband. “Terza’s right. What if he was murdered and they’re still in the house? We need to check it first.”

“You two stay here. I’ll be right back.”

“Be careful,” Terza said.

“Very careful,” Moheenie added.

They waited in silence for Ranger to return. Moments later he entered the room with his thumb up.

“You can take a breath. The house is clear. Now I really need to call the police.” Ranger walked toward the front door to make his call.

Good Gracious! Company’s Coming Cheese Straws

Ingredients:

1 pound (4 cups) freshly shredded sharp cheddar cheese (gotta be sharp!)

1 cup salted butter (yes to salted)

1-1/2 teaspoons salt

4 cups all-purpose flour

½ teaspoon cayenne pepper

½ teaspoon smoked paprika

½ teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon onion powder

1/8 teaspoon black pepper (or white if preferred)

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line your baking sheets with parchment or silicone sheets. Break out your box grater and go to town grating that sharp cheddar cheese on the fine side of the grater. When finished, (usually when your arm starts to hurt), cover and let it come to room temperature.

Add the butter and cheese to a stand mixer bowl and paddle beat for about ten minutes until creamed together.

Add salt, flour, cayenne pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and pepper l and mix on medium speed until fully combined.

Transfer dough to a cookie press fitted with a star tip (if you want your straws to look fancy). Or you can hand-roll long thin strips and cut into uniform lengths (about 3 inches) with a knife.

Bake for 12-14 minutes until lightly-browned. Let cool for 5 to 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Q & A with Linda Kozar

Many authors say that they have always been a writer. When did you come to realize this?

As a child I realized that reading and writing came easily to me. In reading groups at school I used to get in trouble because I had already read ahead to the end and when it was my time to read a section out loud, I had no idea where we were. I read voraciously and often didn’t like the endings to some stories. So, I wrote my own.

Were there any obstacles faced in your journey to publication?

Always. I had always dreamed of writing “a” book. Just one. I thought if you wrote just one book, that would be a dream fulfilled and I could cross that off my list. It never occurred to me that I could write more than one. Anyway, I wrote personal interest stories for newspapers and got paid something like $35 an article. Peanuts. But I really enjoyed writing them and it was a good training ground for me. Eventually, I started working up the confidence to convince myself that if I’d written so many stories, I could certainly write a book. That was the first obstacle. I prayed and talked to God a lot about this, and felt the call in my spirit that this was what I was supposed to do, and be. Once you believe in yourself, the next mountain to climb is convincing other people that your writing has value. Agents. Editors. Readers. This is a continuous obstacle in a writer’s life. You might be the darling of a publishing house one day, but the next day someone else is hired, or your sales aren’t big enough, or the house decides to cancel a line of books, and you’re out on your keister.

Can you tell us a little about what inspired your book?

The title came out of the warm greeting Southern children get from Southern mamas and grandmas and aunts and neighbors and friends of the family. Gimme Some Sugar means you’re about to get a big kiss on the cheek and a hug. And after that, you’re probably going to be offered something to eat (all of which is what I do now). The title reflects those warm feelings of being loved and cared for, like God loves and cares for us.

What do you want your readers to take away with them after finishing Gimme Some Sugar?

I want readers to open Gimme Some Sugar and instantly feel the warmth of tender loving, nostalgic memories, of family, of friends, of kinder times. My desire is for them to have a good laugh, and most importantly, to read something of weight and reflection to inspire them in their daily walk. Devotions are a wonderful kick-start to your day, and hopefully a reminder to open your Bible and study further.

What’s next?

A second book in the series titled Sweet Tea & Thee will be coming out either at the end of 2024 or early 2025. I finished writing the manuscript in January and it’s almost finished going through edits. I’m really excited about this next book.

Connor and Kara have kept the full knowledge of the Red Dagger’s location secret for almost a year. A chance to destroy Heleyor and end the war is within the Lightraider Order’s grasp. They must now reveal what they know and call for action.

With time running out, Connor, Teegan, and Aaron attempt to recover the dagger, and Kara helps the Airguard train a new corps of soldiers— windfighters—in their own bid to change the war’s tide. Meanwhile, Lee and Zel search for Heleyor’s army of tortured Aladoth. This force, thousands strong, has vanished. They’re heading for a hidden portal, and may emerge at the heart of Keledev at any moment.

Every path that lies before the cadets seems a great risk. The slightest misstep may cost them their lives, their loved ones, and their homeland. But to do nothing means certain failure. To succeed, they must charge ahead into dark uncertainty and trust the Rescuer.

    About The Author

As a former fighter pilot, stealth pilot, and tactical deception officer, James R. Hannibal is no stranger to secrets and adventure. He is the award-winning author of thrillers, mysteries, and fantasies for adults and children, and he is the developer of Lightraider Academy games. As a pastor’s kid in Colorado Springs, he guinea-pigged every youth discipleship program of the 1980s, but the one that engaged him and shaped him most as a Christ-follower and Kingdom warrior was DragonRaid, by Dick Wulf—the genesis of the Lightraider world.

There and Back Again: A Game?

The transition from book to game and back again is no easy thing. I’ve been on a steep learning curve since the day I started writing Wolf Soldier, the first book in the Lightraider Academy trilogy. Lion Warrior is the third.

I should walk back a step. Lightraiders is a game. Did you know that? It began as DragonRaid, a 1980s fantasy adventure game designed for teaching Biblical learning and discipleship. DragonRaid had a huge influence on my Christian walk in my teens. I now have the honor of carrying the concepts designed by the game’s original creator, Dick Wulf, to a new generation through games and stories. Before he went on to be with the Lord, Dick was kind enough to write a foreword for Wolf Soldier.

The task, when it came to me, was monumental: take a highly allegorical game with isolated location details and expand it into a full-realm book series while also building a new version of the game designed for today’s teens and families. By His grace, God placed men and women in my path who came alongside me to help—fellow believers who are creators from the realms of Tolkien, Star Wars, DC Comics, and Disney. Without them, it could not have been done.

We’ve been building the game in the background for three years. At the same time, the books have served as a transition from the old to the new. Lion Warrior completes that transition, and the book and the new Lightraiders Adventure Bible System game for teens will release almost simultaneously.

If you read through the series starting with Wolf Soldier, you may get a feel for this transition. The first book is more allegorical and tightly focused, much like the original DragonRaid game. Fantasy terms used in that story draw from the original game, with only a few new terms introduced. Bear Knight begins to broaden that perspective. It stretches past allegory and introduces several new ideas that you’ll find in the new Lightraiders game. In Lion Warrior, my hope is that you’ll finally have a picture of the fully developed realm from the Liberated Land in the south to the frozen islands in the far north of the Dragon Lands. And that story is fully steeped in the new game with terms and game mechanics slipped in for astute readers to find.

So, we’ve come full circle. DragonRaid became the story world in Wolf Solder. Then, as I and the team God sent to me rebuilt the game for a new generation, new elements found their way into Bear Knight. And now we have Lion Warrior, fully based on the new Lightraiders discipleship game. If you read the full trilogy and check out the game, I hope you’ll see it all growing together.

I do love the idea of game to story or vice versa. Are there other game/story combinations you love?

    Excerpt

In this excerpt from Beauty for Ashes, Rebecca and Mr. Pike come upon Perry Quinn after Perry’s ranch has been burned to the ground.

    “This way,” Mr. Pike said.

As they neared the cabin, he slowed. “I must warn you, he’s alive, but barely.”

Rebecca rounded the corner, and her legs grew weak. Morgan! Her heart screamed as she stumbled forward. Mr. Pike steadied her.

She closed her eyes. This was not Morgan. The poor charred man was Perry Quinn. A rancher. A man in desperate need of help. Just like those poor soldiers she helped during the war. Just like Morgan when someone tried to nurse him back to health.

    Fear. Doubt. Insecurity. Fear.

She straightened her back and lifted her chin. She would do what she could to help the poor man.

Rebecca stroked her thumb across Perry’s hand as she wondered what would happen to him. Would he recover? If he did, what would he do? It sounded like he had nothing left on his ranch and no family. Who would care for him and nurse him back to health?

If you like these authors, you’ll enjoy this book too: Tracie Peterson, Tamera Alexander, Karen Witemeyer, Lacy Williams, Jodi Hedlund, Misty M. Beller

    Excerpt

In this excerpt from Joy for Mourning, Grace is headed to the freight office to ship some donations for the charity she runs. She is caught off guard when a stranger is working there.

When Grace stepped into the freight office, she did not see Ira at the counter, so she rang the obnoxious cowbell. She found it annoying, but it seemed like the teamsters could hear the thing even when working in the back storeroom.

“Ira,” she said when she heard footsteps down the hall. “It’s Grace. I’m here about shipping…”

A tall man, who was most definitely not Ira, appeared from the back. My what wonderful blue eyes. They sparkled and reflected the light. Such a nice contrast to his lightly tanned skin. He was thin but still well built. His wavy light brown hair flopped over part of his forehead. A dimple in his chin added to his handsome appearance that nearly stole her breath away. When he smiled, she let out a quick breath and willed her heart to stop slamming into her chest.

“I don’t believe we’ve met,” she said, trying to recover. “I’m Grace Talbert.”

His smile dimmed. “I’m sorry for your loss.”

She glanced down at her dress. No, it was the blue dress she wore, the same blue as his amazing eyes.

He cleared his throat and rushed to explain. “I saw you. The funeral.”

“You,” she whispered. The man in the wagon who passed by—the one she could not stop thinking about. She looked away, lest her gaze revealed her thoughts.

If you like these authors, you’ll enjoy this book too: Tracie Peterson, Tamera Alexander, Karen Witemeyer, Lacy Williams, Jodi Hedlund, Misty M. Beller

    Excerpt

In this excerpt from Oaks of Justice, Alex had just stopped by opposing counsel’s office to meet Mr. Mel Larson. Except Melissa “Mel” may have misled him. When he leaves, her boss Virgil questions her odd behavior.

Mel let out a long breath.

“What was that all about?” Virgil asked.

“He thinks I’m your secretary. I never gave him my first name.”

Virgil cocked his head to one side. “Oh, I see where this is going.”

“You and I both know our client is innocent and the crux of this case is mistaken identity from what you told me earlier,” she said. “What better way to illustrate this point to the court than to show that our esteemed District Attorney is as susceptible as the next person to mistake someone’s identity?”

“Are you sure you want to do that, Mel? He is the District Attorney.”

    “Yes.”

“Alright. For this to be fully effective, you’re going to have to sit in the gallery for jury selection and let me lead it.”

    “That is an excellent idea.”

Pick up Oaks of Justice to see if Mel follows through with her plan.
