Why are we failing to prepare our students for their future? Data shows that over half of college graduates are considered "underemployed." This means that college graduates are more likely to be working in a job or career that does not require their level of education. Why is that? Some would say that we have too many students going to college. That's not the issue, although the cost for college has made the decision more questionable. Others would say that people are majoring in fields that are less relevant. That could be true. In reality, those who go to college and work or participate in internships within their field are much more likely to be healthily employed in their industry once the graduate. What should K-12 schools do? In short, aiming for all students to graduate and attend college is an admirable goal. However, not every child wants to be an academic. And many who do lack the social skills and real-life work ethic to make them ready for the real world. Ultimately, it is up to parents to help their children to mature and grow. But schools can help a lot too. Here's what I have found that works: 1. Have career or job fair days for your students, whether you are 5 or 18, this can be a lot of fun 2. Partner with local businesses for summer internships, especially for HS students 3. Invest in developing the whole child, this includes SEL, civics, and executive functioning learning 4. Understand our limitations, we can only do so much, but we can provide exposure to the real world by having projects, team work, and oral assessments to beyond just paper tests and writing 5. Provide trade and skill development, even from an early age Be creative, look at what others are doing, and really invest in your students. After all, only a small percentage will actually go off to college, graduate, and work in a field and career that is appropriate for their level of education. Article link: https://lnkd.in/eUgNkWjn

🤔 Is your college degree worth it? A new report by the Burning Glass Institute gave mixed results, with 52% of graduates being underemployed a year after graduation. Other parts of the report clearly show that your college degree has a meaningful impact on your career potential, though. So what's the deal? The real issue is thinking the value of college is in the degree itself. It's not. The true value of college is what you learn. The knowledge, skills, and experience you gain. So how do you make sure college benefits you? ✅ Engage in your classes. Be present. ✅ Join a student organization. Be a leader. ✅ Attend every career fair and networking event you can. ✅ Get an internship. Or several. ✅ Study abroad if you can. ✅ Attend professional conferences. ✅ Network with professors, classmates, and alumni. Remember, college is more than a degree—it’s about LEARNING and GROWTH. 🎆 The Henley College STEM Careers Fair 🎆 Career fairs always energise me. I love seeing how these events could influence students' choices and how Microsoft contributes to developing the next generation of tech leaders. At The Henley College's recent #STEM #careerfair, we presented various opportunities at Microsoft, such as apprenticeships, full-time roles in software engineering, product management, marketing, sales, finance, legal, human resources, public relations, and compliance. This is a good reminder that you don’t need to be a tech wizard to thrive in a tech company. There are numerous roles that value skills like communication, leadership, and creativity. So, no matter your background, there’s a place for you in tech. One of my highlights of the event was seeing our Microsoft interns, Eva Callinan, Jody Nwaelene, Alfred Muir in action in playing a crucial role in helping students navigate their next move by sharing their own journeys of securing an apprenticeship with Microsoft. Their stories were not only inspiring but also provided practical insights into the apprenticeship experience. Here are 4 ✨unique✨ things that 4 years of undergrad taught ME: 1. Be intentional ❓ Figure out the “why” for all your actions. If you’re joining a club that doesn’t have your major attached to it (which is normal), figure out why you are doing so. It could be to learn about that topic more to minor in it or just to make new friends! Setting your intention will make things easier when you go into it. I joined Her Campus at SJSU to meet new people and get into writing again. 2. Learn about the different career pathways for your major 🗣️ Most majors are very broad and there are many different paths you can take post-grad. Some ways to learn about these pathways are to attend speaker events and have 1:1 coffee chats with people. Other exciting ways are to get an internship in a certain field or shadow someone you know. I learned that I want to do product marketing through an SJSU Marketing Association speaker event and through my internship. 3. First impressions are crucial 👋🏽 When you go to a speaker event, be the one to ask a question at the end. Then when you go up to the speaker afterwards to chat and connect with them, you’ll stand out. There are many people at that event, so be the curious one. When you schedule coffee chats, make sure you’re the one scheduling everything and they just show up. 4. Treat each semester like a clean slate 🧼 I personally enjoyed preparing for a new semester like it was a fresh start. New classes and new opportunities. A few days before classes started, I used Notion to organize everything and come up with some goals for the semester. Think about what you’ll be doing in the upcoming semester to help enhance your career. We have equipped them with proactive tips and quick access to essential on and off-campus resources, including navigating career fairs and finding summer internships. 🤝 Buddy Matching: Our buddy matching program fostered meaningful connections within our community, providing incoming graduate students with personalized support and a sense of belonging. 💼 Internship Ready Series: Our workshops and one-on-one interactions empowered incoming graduate students to navigate the internship hunt. Drawing from our collective experiences, we offered practical guidance to jumpstart their professional journey. 🌐 Launch of LinkedIn Page: Navigating technical hurdles and an approval process, we expanded our online presence and facilitated networking opportunities by successfully launching our organization's LinkedIn page.
